Akpo Oil Field Profile
Location and Geology
- The Akpo Oil Field is located approximately 200 kilometers offshore Nigeria, within the Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) 2, formerly known as Oil Mining License (OML) 130. It lies in water depths ranging between 1,300 to 1,500 meters.
- The field is situated about 175 kilometers from Port Harcourt.
Discovery and Development
- The Akpo field was discovered in April 2000 via the first exploration well, Akpo-1. The appraisal drilling program included four vertical wells, two side tracks, and detailed reservoir and development studies.
- The development project was launched in 2005, with production starting in March 2009.
Ownership and Partners
- The Akpo field is operated by TotalEnergies (now known as TotalEnergies) with a 24% interest. Other partners include the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), Sapetro, and Brazil’s Petrobras. For the Akpo West field, the ownership structure is slightly different, with TotalEnergies holding 24%, CNOOC holding 45%, Sapetro holding 15%, and Prime 130 holding 16%.
Infrastructure and Production
FPSO Vessel:
- The Akpo Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel was commissioned in mid-2005. It measures 310 meters in length, 61 meters in width, and 31 meters in height. The vessel is permanently moored in 1,314 meters of water using 12 mooring lines, each 2,400 meters long.
- The FPSO has a storage capacity of two million barrels of oil and is designed to process 185,000 barrels of condensate and 15 million cubic meters of gas per day.
- The vessel can accommodate 240 crew members and has a production capacity of 225,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Subsea Production System:
- The subsea production system includes 44 wells (22 producers, 20 water injectors, and two gas injectors), 100 kilometers of subsea flowlines, 80 kilometers of umbilicals, and 14 risers tying the subsea network into the FPSO.
Gas Processing:
- Gas produced from the field is piped 150 kilometers to the Amenam/Kpono platform and then transported to the Bonny liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Bonny Island in Rivers State, Nigeria.
Akpo West Field
- The Akpo West field is a part of the larger Akpo field and is located 135 kilometers off the Nigerian coast within PML 2.
- Production at the Akpo West field commenced in February 2024 and is tied back to the existing Akpo FPSO facility.
- The field has two production wells and is expected to add 14,000 barrels of condensate production per day by mid-2024, with plans to increase gas production to up to four million cubic meters per day by 2028.
Contractors and Contracts
- FPSO Construction:
- The construction of the FPSO was awarded to a consortium including Technip (now TechnipFMC) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). Technip managed the project and handled the initial engineering phase, while HHI constructed the hull and topside modules.
- Subsea and Umbilicals:
- Saipem was contracted for the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning of the umbilicals, flowlines, risers, the oil loading terminal, the FPSO mooring system, and the gas export pipeline.
- Power Generation:
- Rolls-Royce provided six RB211 industrial gas turbine power generation units to supply 100MW of electrical power for the FPSO.
Reserves and Production
- The Akpo field has estimated proved and probable reserves of 620 million barrels of condensate and more than 28 billion cubic meters of gas.
- The field achieved a peak production capacity of 180,000 barrels per day after starting production in 2009. The Akpo FPSO produced an average of 124,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2023.
Environmental and Cost Considerations
- The Akpo West field development leverages the existing Akpo facilities to keep operating costs low and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. The project’s carbon intensity is expected to be below 5 kg CO2e/boe, contributing to reducing the average carbon intensity of TotalEnergies’ portfolio.
