Al Jalila Oil and Gas Field Profile
Location
The Al Jalila Oil and Gas Field is located offshore of the United Arab Emirates, specifically in the Persian Gulf, near the coast of Dubai. The exact coordinates are 25.3333, 54.6667 (WGS 84).
Discovery and Production
The field was discovered in early 2010. Production at the Al Jalila field began in 2011, although initial expectations suggested it would start in late 2014.
Operator and Ownership
The field is operated and owned by Dubai Petroleum Establishment (DPE), a state-owned company.
Field Development
The development of the Al Jalila field has been undertaken in phases. Here are some key points:
- Initial Phase: The first phase involved the construction of a basic unmanned offshore production platform with a single compressor unit and about 12 kilometers of flowlines to transport oil to DPE's onshore processing and distribution facilities. This phase was contracted to a consortium of US-based Global Industries and the local company Lamprell in September 2010. The initial production was estimated to be around 5,000-10,000 barrels per day (b/d), though this figure was not confirmed by DPE.
- Second Phase: The second phase included the development of production facilities at the Al Jalila field, involving the construction and installation of the Jalilah B platform. This platform consists of a 900-ton deck and a 500-ton jacket, along with 13 new risers on existing platforms. Additionally, 110 kilometers of pipelines ranging from 6 to 24 inches in diameter were installed. Technip was awarded the contract for this phase in 2014, with support from Hallin Marine for offshore pipelay and platform installation.
Production Capacity
Excluding the Al Jalila field, DPE's other offshore fields (Fateh, Southwest Fateh, Falah, and Rashid) produce an estimated 50,000-70,000 b/d of crude oil. This is a significant reduction from the peak production of about 400,000 b/d in the early 1990s.
Contractors
Key contractors involved in the development of the Al Jalila field include:
- Technip: Responsible for the construction and installation of the Jalilah B platform, the jacket, and the installation of pipelines.
- Global Industries and Lamprell: Involved in the initial phase of the project, including the construction of the basic unmanned offshore production platform.
- Hallin Marine: Provided support for offshore pipelay and platform installation.
Naming
The Al Jalila field is named after the daughter of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the UAE.
Geographical Context
The field is situated near the existing Rashid field, which is also operated by DPE.
