Location

The Al-Karkara/A-Structure oil and gas field is located offshore in the territorial waters of Qatar, approximately 90 kilometers to the east of Doha. The exact coordinates are around 25.0811, 52.4847 (WGS 84).

Discovery and Production

• The A-Structures, including A-North and A-South, were discovered in 1971.
• The Al-Karkara oil field was discovered in 1988.
• Production commenced in March 2006.

• The field is operated by Qatar Petroleum Development Co Ltd (Japan).
• The ownership includes Cosmo Energy Exploration & Production, along with Sojitz Corporation.

Field Details

• The field is situated in shallow water with a depth of approximately 66 feet, located in Block 1 SE.
• It is classified as a producing conventional oil field.

Production Statistics

• As of 2019, the field produced 93.02 million cubic meters of gas per year and 2.33 million barrels of oil per year. In 2020, oil production was 1.4 million barrels per year.
• The field has recovered 88.04% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production achieved in 2013. Production is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2035.

Achievements and Environmental Practices

• The Al-Karkara and A-Structures fields are notable for being the first in Qatar to achieve zero gas flaring by re-injecting additional sour gas underground.

Production History and Volume

• Since the start of production in 2006, the fields have produced a total of 33.5 million barrels of crude oil.

Development Agreements

• QatarEnergy (formerly Qatar Petroleum) has a development and production sharing agreement with Qatar Petroleum Development Company (QPD), which was renewed in a new five-year agreement starting from 2022.

Operational Status
