Location and Geology

Project Details

• Phase 1: The first phase of the project involved a nine-well development and came online in late 2005. It has a capacity of approximately 750 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas.
• Phase 2: Sanctioned in 2006, the second phase aims to supply an additional 1.25 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) to the domestic market.

Production

• The AKG-1 project produces about 750 million cubic feet a day (mmcfd) of gas, which is allocated to various customers including Oryx GTL, industrial users in the Ras Laffan Industrial City, and other prospective customers such as the independent water and power project (IWPP) and a proposed condensate refinery.
• The total production capacity of the Al Khaleej Gas Project is 2 bcfd, with Phase 1 contributing 750 mmcfd and Phase 2 adding another 1.25 bcfd.

Reserves

As of 2021, the remaining reserves for the Al-Khaleej Gas Project 1 are estimated at 205.07 billion cubic meters of gas.

Infrastructure and Contractors

• The project involves the installation of new gas treatment and natural gas liquid recovery units at the RasGas site. The upstream engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) package was carried out by J Ray McDermott Middle East, while the downstream works were performed by a joint venture of Chiyoda Corporation, Mitsui & Company, Snamprogetti, and the Almana Group.
• For Phase 2, additional onshore gas treating, liquids recovery, and fractionation facilities were constructed, along with two more offshore wellhead platforms. Contractors involved in Phase 2 include McDermott, Technip, and Saipem.

Customers and Usage

The gas produced from AKG-1 is supplied to various domestic customers, including Oryx GTL, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Sasol, as well as other industrial and power generation projects in the Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Production History and Future

• The first gas from Phase 1 was produced in 2005, and Phase 2 began production in 2009.
• Production from the Al-Khaleej Gas Project 1 is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit, projected to be around 2074.
