Arthit Gas and Condensate Field Profile
Location
The Arthit Gas and Condensate Field is located approximately 230 kilometers offshore of Thailand’s Songkhla province in the Gulf of Thailand. It spans across five concession blocks: B14A, B15A, B16A, G8/50, and G9/48.
Geology and Reserves
- The field's reservoir is of the Late Eocene to Late Oligocene formation and consists of Miocene retrograde gas sands.
- The field is estimated to contain proven gas reserves of about 1.9 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of wet gas.
- Condensate reserves are also significant, with 1P reserves estimated at around 23.8 million barrels as of 2019.
Discovery and Development
- The Arthit field was discovered by PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) in 1999, following a 3D seismic study conducted in 1998.
- The first phase of exploration and appraisal drilling began in 1999, with seven wells drilled until 2000. A second phase involving 14 wells was completed by February 2002.
- Development drilling commenced in 2004, with the first well spudded in October 2005. The field was developed in several phases, including 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, and 2A.
Production
- First production from the field was achieved in March 2008, following an investment of $1.4 billion.
- Average production in the second quarter of 2011 ranged from 280 to 330 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of natural gas and 13,000 to 14,000 barrels per day of condensate.
- As of 2021, the field produced approximately 3,142 million cubic meters of gas and 4.54 million barrels of condensate per year.
Infrastructure
- The field is currently in production through more than 90 production wells tied back to six wellhead platforms.
- The Arthit Central Processing Platform, the largest offshore platform in Southeast Asia, weighing 17,000 tonnes, processes the gas and condensate. It was constructed in Batam Island, Indonesia.
- Produced gas is exported to the Erawan Riser Platform through a 200km long, 42-inch diameter subsea pipeline. Condensate is exported to the Bongkot FSO2 through a 30km long, 8-inch diameter subsea pipeline.
Ownership and Partners
- PTTEP holds an 80% interest and operates the field.
- Chevron Thailand holds a 16% interest.
- Mitsui Oil Exploration Company (MOECO) Thailand holds a 4% interest.
Expansion Plans
- PTTEP and its partners are planning to develop the south area of the Arthit gas field, which includes adding 12 platforms, including 11 wellhead platforms and one Arthit South Gas Gathering Platform (AGP). This expansion aims to increase local production to meet rising domestic demand.
Contractors and Services
- Key contractors involved in the project include McDermott for the central processing platform, and other companies such as Honeywell International and Multiphase Oil and Gas.
Production Outlook
- The field currently accounts for approximately 11% of Thailand’s daily gas output. Based on economic assumptions, production is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2055, with 46.47% of the total recoverable reserves already recovered as of the last available data.
