Profile for Ballymore (MC607) - Chevron Oil and Gas Project
Location
The Ballymore (MC607) project is located in the Mississippi Canyon protraction area of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, approximately 3 miles northeast of Chevron's Blind Faith production platform.
The exact coordinates are 28.366, -88.241 (WGS 84).
Water Depth and Geology
The project is situated in water depths of approximately 6,537 feet (1,993 meters).
The discovery is part of the Jurassic Norphlet trend, known for significant oil and gas reserves.
Discovery and Development
The Ballymore prospect was discovered in December 2017 by Chevron and TotalEnergies. The initial well reached a total measured depth of 29,194 feet and encountered more than 670 feet of net oil pay with excellent reservoir and fluid characteristics.
The project was sanctioned by Chevron in May 2022, with a Final Investment Decision (FID) made at that time.
Ownership and Operation
Chevron U.S.A. Inc. is the operator of the project, holding a 60% working interest. TotalEnergies E&P USA, Inc. holds the remaining 40% interest.
Production and Reserves
The project is expected to produce up to 75,000 barrels of crude oil per day, with potentially recoverable oil-equivalent resources estimated at more than 150 million barrels.
The reserves have been classified as follows:
150 million boe (barrels of oil equivalent) as of 2022.
357 million boe as of 2023.
Development Details
The project involves a three-mile subsea tieback to the existing Chevron-operated Blind Faith platform. This approach is designed to lower development costs by leveraging existing infrastructure and using standardized equipment and repeatable engineering solutions.
The development includes three production wells tied back via one flowline to the Blind Faith facility.
Investment and Timeline
The project requires an investment of approximately $1.6 billion.
First oil is expected in 2025, with production design capacity of 27.38 million barrels per year.
Infrastructure and Operations
Key infrastructure includes the installation of new modules on the Blind Faith facility, such as a vapor recovery unit and a utility electrical building, which are critical for the project’s success.
Oil and natural gas production will be transported via existing infrastructure.
Environmental and Carbon Intensity
The U.S. Gulf of Mexico production, including Ballymore, has some of the lowest carbon intensity in Chevron’s portfolio, around 6 kg CO2 equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent, significantly lower than the global industry average.
Project Status
As of 2024, the project is in the development phase, with significant progress made, including the installation of critical modules on the Blind Faith facility.
