The block is operated and owned entirely by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), which is the largest crude oil and natural gas company in India.

Discovery and Production

The Bassein & Satellite Oil and Gas Block was discovered in 1976 and began production in 1988. The field has been in operation for over three decades, well past its estimated life of 20 years.

Production Details

• Gas Production: The field has seen significant fluctuations in gas production. It achieved a peak output of 29 million standard cubic meters per day (mmscmd) in 2011, but production declined thereafter. However, with new projects and management changes, gas production regained the 30 mmscmd mark and was expected to reach 37 mmscmd by December 2018.
  • As of 2017, the cumulative gas production was 248 billion cubic meters (bcm), with an annual production rate of 10,857.58 million cubic meters (m³/y).
• Oil Production: Crude oil production from the asset has also increased, rising from about 1 million tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes over three years, making it the second highest oil-producing asset of ONGC. The annual oil production was approximately 19.88 million barrels per year as of 2017.

• Vasai East Additional Development Project: This project will increase crude oil production from 5,600 barrels per day (bpd) to 17,550 bpd and gas from 1.3 mmscmd to 2.5 mmscmd.
• Daman Development Project: Expected to give a peak gas output of 8.3 mmscmd and 9,600 bpd of condensate.
• C-26 Cluster Development Project: Will produce 5.94 bcm of gas and 0.644 million cubic meters of condensate.

Processing and Infrastructure

The gas and condensate from the South Bassein field are processed at the Hazira Gas Processing Complex in Gujarat. This complex can process 52.5 million standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD) of gas and 12,600 cubic meters per day of condensate. Modifications are being made to adjust to changes in feed capacity and gas composition.

Economic and Strategic Importance

The Bassein & Satellite block is one of ONGC's fastest-growing assets and plays a crucial role in India's energy landscape. ONGC contributes around 74% of India's crude oil production and 63% of its natural gas production, making this block a significant contributor to the country's energy needs.

Future Outlook

ONGC is focusing on a threefold exploration strategy that includes revisiting mature basins, solidifying emerging basins, and exploring new frontiers. This strategy aims to maintain and increase production from fields like Bassein & Satellite, ensuring continued energy supply to meet India's growing economic objectives.
