Bayan Oil and Gas Field Profile
Location
The Bayan oil and gas field is situated in sub-block 4Q-21 of the Balingian Province, approximately 80 kilometers north-west of Bintulu, offshore Sarawak, Malaysia. It is located at a water depth of 28 meters.
Ownership and Operation
The field is operated by Halliburton Bayan Petroleum, a joint venture between Dialog D & P (95% stake), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia’s Dialog, and Asia Energy Services (5%), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Halliburton International. Dialog D & P has increased its stake in Halliburton Bayan Petroleum through additional equity acquisitions in 2019.
Field Discovery and Development
- The Bayan field was discovered by the exploratory well BY-1 in 1976.
- It is a tectonically complex formation with productive reservoirs containing deposits from the lower coastal plain to delta plain of the early Miocene era, and significant reservoirs in the middle Miocene formations.
- Initial development involved four development wells in block one of the S3.8 reservoir in 1984, followed by five additional development wells in block four.
- A 3D seismic data survey was conducted in 1986, and the field has been further analyzed with 13 appraisal wells to assess the potential of various fault blocks.
Infrastructure and Production
- The field is part of the Balai Cluster, bounded by the D18 field on the north-east and the Temana field on the south-east.
- Production from the field is exported to the Bintulu crude oil terminal via the Bayan and Temana platforms.
- The field uses several platforms, including BYDP-A, BYDP-B, and BYDP-C. Horizontal wells have been employed to optimize oil recovery from thin oil rim reservoirs.
Bayan Gas Redevelopment Project Phase 2
- This phase involves further development of the Bayan field under the brownfield Bayan gas redevelopment project.
- A new-built floating mobile offshore production unit (MOPU) is being used for gas separation and processing. The MOPU will be connected to the existing BYR-A riser platform via a new 12.7 km-long pipeline between the BYDP-C and BYR-A platforms.
- The MOPU has a processing capacity of approximately 100 million cubic feet per day of gas.
- Four new wells will be drilled from the BYDP-C platform, and existing infrastructure will be upgraded.
- Produced gas will be exported to liquefied natural gas producers in Malaysia and utilized as feedstock at the gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant of Shell.
Contractors and Service Providers
- Petronas awarded a ten-year contract to Tanjung Offshore Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of T7 Global, and its consortium partner VME Process Systems Malaysia, for the lease, operation, and maintenance of the MOPU. This contract includes complete engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) works, as well as operation and maintenance services.
Partnerships and Collaborations
- Halliburton Bayan Petroleum has partnered with Petronas Carigali to enhance the recoverable reserves in the Bayan field.
- Activities related to production enhancement and further development studies have been ongoing since 2015.
- In November 2012, the companies collaborated on a $1.2 billion oilfield services contract (OSC) to manage the Bayan field up to 2036.
