Berbigão Oil and Gas Field Profile
Location
The Berbigão Oil and Gas Field is located in the ultra-deepwater of the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil. Specifically, it is situated in block BM-S-11A, approximately 230 km off the coast of the Rio de Janeiro state, at a water depth of about 2,280 meters (or 7,547 feet).
Operator and Ownership
The field is operated by Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras), which holds a 42.5% stake in the consortium. Other partners include:
- Galp Energia SGPS SA (through Petrogal Brasil) with a 10% stake.
- Shell Brasil Petróleo Ltda. with a 25% stake.
- Total E&P do Brasil Ltda. with a 22.5% stake.
Discovery and Production
- The Berbigão field was discovered in 2008.
- The Final Investment Decision (FID) for the development of the field was made, leading to the start of production in November 2019.
Production Capacity
- The FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading) unit P-68, which is dedicated to the Berbigão and Sururu fields, has a capacity to process 150,000 barrels of oil per day and 6 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.
- As of 2020, the field produced approximately 21.97 million barrels of oil and 266.45 million cubic meters of gas per year. By 2022, the oil production had adjusted to around 15.98 million barrels per year and gas production to about 226.24 million cubic meters per year.
Field Characteristics
- The Berbigão field is part of the Iara complex, which also includes the Oeste de Atapu, Sul de Tupi, and Sururu oil and gas fields.
- The field contains high-quality oil with low sulfur content and associated natural gas. The oil is characterized by its light density, similar to other fields in the Santos Basin.
Development Plan
- The development plan involves connecting the FPSO P-68 to 10 producer wells and seven injector wells.
- Extended Well Tests (EWTs) were conducted in the area, including a six-month EWT in the Sururu Southwest area, which confirmed the high productivity of the wells and the quality of the carbonate reservoirs.
Unitisation Agreements
- The Berbigão and Sururu accumulations are subject to unitisation processes with surrounding areas. Unitisation agreements were submitted to the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) and have been approved for some areas, such as the Atapu accumulation.
Future Outlook
- Production from the Berbigão field is expected to continue until it reaches its economic limit in 2063, with peak production anticipated in 2024 based on current economic assumptions.
