Bongkot Main Oil and Gas Field Profile
Location
The Bongkot Main Oil and Gas Field is located offshore in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 600 km south of Bangkok and 180 km off the Thai coast. It is situated within the Malay Basin, close to the boundary with neighboring countries, Malaysia to the south and Vietnam to the east. The field is in block B15, with coordinates approximately 7.829, 102.579 (WGS 84).
Project Details
- Status: Operating
- Operator: PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP)
- Ownership: PTTEP (44.5%), TotalEnergies E&P Thailand (33.33%), and BG Group (22.0%).
Discovery and Development
- Discovery Year: 1973
- First Production: 1993
- The first petroleum concessions were awarded in 1972 to Tenneco and BP. Following several exploration wells, the Royal Thai Government purchased the concessions in 1988 and assigned PTTEP to develop the field. A joint venture was formed in 1990 involving PTTEP, TOTAL, British Gas, and Statoil.
Infrastructure
- Phase I Development: Included three wellhead platforms (WHP), a central processing platform (CPP), a living quarters platform, and a floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel for condensate handling. The process facilities were designed for a maximum production rate of 300 MMSCF/D (million standard cubic feet per day).
- Phase II Development: Implemented to increase the daily contractual quantity (DCQ) to 350 MMSCF/D, with new facilities commissioned by the end of 1995.
- Additional Developments: Further phases included the addition of more WHPs and a riser platform, completed in 1996.
Production
- Current Production:
- Gas: Approximately 2067.11 million cubic meters per year (as of 2022).
- Condensate: The field has produced cumulative condensate of around 154.18 million barrels as of 2021.
- Peak Production: The field has recovered about 73.33% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production achieved in 2023. Production is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2041.
Reserves
- Condensate Reserves:
- 1P reserves: Approximately 8.23 million barrels (2019) and 3.47 million barrels (2021).
- Gas Reserves:
- 1P reserves: Approximately 10,543.68 million cubic meters (2019) and 4,699.14 million cubic meters (2021).
Facilities
- Processing Platform: The central processing platform is equipped with production separation, CO2 removal, gas compressor units, power generators, and a heating medium system. It also includes gas metering and export facilities, a membrane pre-treatment unit, and condensate stabilization units.
- Wellhead Platforms: The field includes multiple wellhead platforms, both central and remote, to support production.
- Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) Vessel: Used for handling liquids.
Economic and Regulatory
- Sales Contracts: The gas produced is sold to the Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) and distributed via the PTT sealine system to Rayong and Surat Thani provinces, primarily for electricity generation.
- Fiscal and Regulatory: The field operates under a concession agreement with the Royal Thai Government. The concessionaire is committed to a minimum daily contractual quantity (DCQ) with the option to increase gas deliveries based on field performance.
Significance
- The Bongkot Main Oil and Gas Field is one of the primary suppliers of domestic gas to Bangkok and accounts for approximately 22% of Thailand’s daily gas output.
