Bu Haseer Oil and Gas Field Profile
Location
The Bu Haseer oil and gas field is located offshore Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, specifically between Das and Zirku Islands. The coordinates for the field are approximately 25.1478, 52.7932 (WGS 84).
Ownership and Operation
The field is owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) with a 60% stake, and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) holds the remaining 40%. It is operated by Al Yasat Company for Petroleum Operations, a joint venture between ADNOC and CNPC.
Project Details
Development Phases
The Bu Haseer field is being developed in two phases:
- Early Production System (EPS) Phase: This phase commenced operations in March 2018, with an initial production rate of 8,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd). The EPS phase involved the transportation of crude oil from Das Island to China, starting in June 2018.
- Full Field Development (FFD) Phase: Scheduled to come online in 2020, this phase aims to increase the production capacity to 16,000 bpd. It includes the installation of water injection facilities, new offshore wellhead towers, and modifications to existing facilities. Additional infrastructure such as new separators, scrubbers, and metering facilities at Das Island, as well as water injection pipelines and communication cables, are also part of this phase.
Field Characteristics
- The field is part of a larger concession block that includes both onshore and offshore areas. The offshore block covers several fields, including Bu Haseer, Belbazem, Umm Al Dholou, Umm Al Salsal, and Yaser. The onshore concession area spans approximately 7,800 km², which is roughly double the size of Dubai.
- The water depth at the Bu Haseer field is about 121 feet, making it a shallow water field.
Production and Reserves
- The Bu Haseer field started production in March 2018 with an initial rate of 8,000 bpd. The target for full-field production is 15,000 to 16,000 bpd.
- The field is expected to recover 16.58% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production anticipated in 2031. Production is projected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2073.
Contractors and Services
Several contractors have been involved in the development of the Bu Haseer field:
- National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC): Awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the full field development phase, valued at AED633m ($172.3m).
- NRGtech Services: Conducted a hazard and operability study for the project.
- Inspection Verification Bureau (IVB): Provided design review services and issued the final certificate for the FFD phase.
- Penspen: Received a contract worth more than $70m to provide project management consultancy (PMC) services.
- Consolidated Contractors Engineering: Performed brownfield works in the EPS phase, including pre-commissioning activities, civil, piping, structural steel, and electrical and instrumentation work.
- Seacor Marine: Provided the Seacor Mariner survey vessel for a geophysical route survey.
- Boskalis International: Used their Colbart and Goodwin Sand backhoe dredgers for trenching and back-filling works at Zirku Island.
- Other Contractors: BSS Technologies, RMT Valvomeccanica, and Petromac have also been involved in various aspects of the project.
Technological and Operational Innovations
Al Yasat Petroleum Operations has implemented several innovative technologies and strategies:
- Digital Twin Technology: Used for efficient marginal field development.
- Virtual Geo-fencing and Virtual Metering: Part of the digital journey to enhance operations.
- Intelligence and Wisdom Center (IWC): Aimed at delivering unmanned oil fields.
- Controlled Release Smart Tracer Technology: Applied for inflow monitoring on offshore oil fields to optimize costs.
In-Country Value (ICV) and Social Impact
The Bu Haseer project has a high In-Country Value (ICV) of 56%, contributing significantly to the UAE’s socio-economic development. The project also emphasizes the development of local and international partnerships, creating job opportunities for UAE nationals and promoting gender diversity in technical and non-technical roles.
