Caofeidian 11-6 Oil Field Expansion Project Profile

Location and Geology

The Caofeidian 11-6 oil field is located in the western part of Bohai Bay, offshore China. The field is situated in blocks 04/36 and 05/36, with an average water depth of approximately 20-25 meters.

Operators and Stakeholders

The project is operated by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), which holds a 60% working interest in the Caofeidian 11-6 oilfield. Other stakeholders include Brightoil Petroleum with a 29.18% interest, and SPC E&P (China) holding the remaining stake.

Discovery and Production History

The Caofeidian oil field was initially discovered in 2000 by Kerr-McGee, along with partners Newfield Exploration and Sino-American Energy. The first oil production from the Caofeidian 11-1/11-2 field began in July 2004, while the Caofeidian 11-6/12-1S fields started production in October 2006.

Expansion Project Details

The comprehensive adjustment project at the Caofeidian 11-6 oil field was brought online in November 2019. Here are some key details of the expansion:

  • Platforms and Infrastructure: The project involved the development of two large central processing platforms, CEPJ and CEPI, weighing approximately 11,000 tons and 13,000 tons respectively. The CEPJ platform jacket was constructed by COOEC, a subsidiary of CNOOC, while the CEPI module is an eight-legged, steel structure with a three-layer main deck.
  • Existing Facilities: The project utilizes existing oilfield facilities, including six wellhead platforms and a 900-foot-long floating, production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel named Hai Yang Shi You 112. This FPSO can process up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day and store up to one million barrels of oil for further offloading in tankers.
  • Wells: A total of 89 producer wells are planned, with 12 already producing as of November 2019.

Production Capacity

The Caofeidian 11-6/12-1S fields initially had a peak capacity of six million barrels of oil per year. Following the expansion, the field is anticipated to reach a peak production capacity of approximately 28,700 barrels per day by 2021.

Recovery and Reserves

As of the latest reports, the Caofeidian 11-1/11-6 Comprehensive Adjustment Project has recovered 19.21% of its total recoverable reserves.

Transportation

The produced crude oil is transported to the FPSO via a 13km-long subsea pipeline. The crude oil from the Caofeidian 11-3/5 fields is produced using an unmanned facility and also transported to the FPSO for processing and storage.

This comprehensive adjustment project is part of CNOOC's efforts to enhance production and extend the life of the Caofeidian oil fields, contributing significantly to China's offshore oil production.
