Clipper North

Location

• The Clipper South gas field is located in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) of the southern North Sea, specifically in blocks 48/19 and 48/20. It is approximately 100 km east of the Lincolnshire coast.

Ownership and Operation

• The field is currently owned by Ineos and Spirit Energy. It is remotely operated by Shell. Previously, RWE Dea UK and Fairfield Energy held shares, but these were sold to Ineos in 2015.

Discovery and Development

• The Clipper South gas field was discovered by Shell in 1982. Two appraisal wells were drilled in 1992. The development of the field was sanctioned by the government in March 2011, with the field platform installed in August 2011. Drilling for the first of the proposed five wells began in February 2012, and first gas was delivered in August 2012.

Geology and Reserves

• The field reservoir is situated in wind-blown Permian-age sandstones belonging to the Rotliegend group. The source of dry gas is the Carboniferous coal measures underneath the sandstones. The field has reserves of approximately 13.4 billion cubic meters of gas and an estimated production life of 15 years.

Production Details

• The field is developed using four long, horizontal, multi-fractured wells tied to a Not Permanently Attended Installation (NPAI). The wells range in depth from 3,876m to 5,866m, with the first well drilled to a depth of 4,903m with eight hydraulic fractures.

Gas Transportation

• Initially, gas was transported via the Lincolnshire Offshore Gas Gathering System (LOGGS) and the Theddlethorpe gas terminal. However, following the shutdown of these facilities, Ineos invested $80 million in a new pipeline, subsea infrastructure, and processing equipment to reroute production to the Clipper hub. The gas is now processed at Shell’s Bacton terminal in Norfolk and fed into the UK National Grid.

Contractors and Infrastructure

• Technip was contracted for pipeline design, installation, and project management. Heerema Vlissingen constructed the jacket, platform, and piles, while Seaway Heavy Lifting installed the platform. Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) installed the integrated control and safety systems (ICSS).

Given the absence of any information on a "Clipper North oil project," it appears that the term might be a misunderstanding or misnomer, and the existing data pertains solely to the Clipper South gas field.
