Conwy Oil Field Profile
Location and Geography
The Conwy oil field is situated in the East Irish Sea, UK, specifically in block 110/12a, under license P1476. It is approximately 33 kilometers north of Llandudno, Wales, and 12 kilometers northwest of the Douglas platform. The field is in water depths of about 33 meters.
Discovery and Production
- The Conwy field was discovered by EOG Resources UK (EOGUK) in June 2009 through an exploratory well.
- The field began production in March 2016 after a series of development activities.
- Initially, EOGUK was the operator, but in November 2018, Tailwind Energy acquired EOG’s UK business, assuming operatorship of the field.
- In May 2021, Eni UK agreed to acquire a 100% interest in the Conwy field from Tailwind Energy, subject to regulatory approvals.
Field Development
- The Conwy field development involves a Not Permanently Attended Installation (NPAI) platform, which is tied back to the Eni-operated Douglas complex.
- The development includes three production wells and two water injection wells.
- A 12km-long, 8in-diameter subsea production pipeline and a separate water injection pipeline connect the Conwy platform to the Douglas complex. An umbilical provides electricity and control functions from the Douglas facilities to the Conwy field.
Infrastructure
- The NPAI platform, pipelines, and umbilical were installed in 2012.
- The drilling of the three production wells was completed in 2013.
- The Douglas platform underwent modifications to include a crude oil processing module to handle the well stream from the Conwy platform.
- The field also includes a condensate injection system; a project in November 2019 converted a condensate injector well to a second water injector, increasing production capacity by 25% and recoverable reserves by approximately 1.5 million barrels.
Production and Reserves
- The Conwy field produced approximately 2.1 million barrels of oil equivalent (Mboe) in 2019.
- The field is estimated to hold recoverable reserves of about 15.8 million barrels of oil.
Contractors and Contractors' Roles
- HSM Offshore: Awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, installation (EPCI), and hook-up contract for the Conwy wellhead platform and reception module.
- Technip: Awarded a subsea installation contract for the development of the Conwy field, including the welding and installation of production and water injection pipelines, and an umbilical.
- M.C. Construction (Cleveland): Provided fabrication, painting, and delivery of the primary and secondary steelwork structures.
- Frames Group: Supplied control and safeguarding equipment for the wellhead control panel.
- Bibby Hydromap: Conducted a rig site clearance survey, including a clearance survey, bathymetric and debris survey, seabed level and debris survey, and a pipeline route survey.
Recent Developments
- Production at the Conwy field was halted in the second quarter of 2017 due to facility improvements and operational issues with the export pipeline. Production resumed in February 2018.
- The conversion of a condensate injection (CCI) project in November 2019 enhanced the field’s production capacity and recoverable reserves.
Integration with Douglas Complex
- The crude oil produced from the Conwy field is processed at the Douglas complex, which includes a wellhead tower, a processing platform, and an accommodation unit.
- The processed oil is then transported through a pipeline to an Oil Storage Installation (OSI), a permanently moored barge with a storage capacity of approximately 860,000 barrels of oil. Shuttle tankers transport the oil from the OSI to the shore.
