Duva Oil and Gas Field Profile

Location

The Duva oil and gas field is located in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, within the production license (PL) 636 of block 36/7. It is situated approximately 35 km off the coast of Hordaland, Norway, and about 6 km north-east of the Gjøa field, and 12 km from the Gjøa production platform.

Discovery and Licensing

The Duva field was discovered in 2016 with the drilling of the 36/7-4 wildcat well by the Transocean Arctic semi-submersible drilling rig. The exploration license for PL636 was awarded to GDF Suez (now Engie Energy) in 2012, along with Spring Energy and Idemitsu Petroleum as licensees.

Geology and Reserves

The field's reservoir is of early Cretaceous age, specifically within the turbiditic sandstones of the Agat Formation. The field holds oil and gas resources at a depth of approximately 2.2 km beneath the seabed. The estimated reserves of the Duva field are around 88 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe), including 3.7 million cubic meters of oil and condensate, 8.39 billion cubic meters of sales gas, and 1.03 million tonnes of natural gas liquids.

Development Details

The Duva field is developed as a subsea tie-back to the Gjøa production platform. The development involves a four-slot subsea template connected to three oil production wells and one gas production well. The well stream is processed and exported through the Gjøa semi-submersible platform. The field is operated from the Gjøa platform via a dedicated umbilical connection.

Production

First production from the Duva field began in August 2021. The field is expected to produce for a minimum of 10 years, with a maximum output of approximately 30,000 barrels of oil-equivalent per day (boepd).

Drilling Operations

The drilling activities were undertaken by the Deepsea Yantai (previously known as Beacon Atlantic), a harsh environment semi-submersible drilling rig owned by CIMC Raffles Offshore and managed by Odfjell Drilling. The drilling contract initially included six wells, with options for additional wells.

Contractors and Partners

  • Operator: Neptune Energy Norge AS
  • Partners: Idemitsu Petroleum Norge AS (30%), PGNiG Upstream Norway AS (30%), and Sval Energi AS (10%).
  • Key Contractors: CIMC Raffles Offshore, Odfjell Drilling, TechnipFMC, and Aker Engineering and Technology.

Investment and Approval

The total investment for the Duva field development is estimated at NOK 5.5 billion ($640 million). The plan for development and operation (PDO) for the Duva field, along with the Gjøa P1 field, was approved by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate in June 2019.

Environmental and Operational Notes

The Gjøa platform, which processes and exports the Duva field's production, is notable for being the world’s first floating oil and gas platform to be supplied with electricity from the shore, significantly reducing CO2 emissions per barrel of oil-equivalent output.

Production Performance

As of the latest data, the cumulative production from the Duva field includes:

  • Oil: Approximately 9.96 million barrels by the end of 2022.
  • Gas and NGLs: The field has not reported significant gas or natural gas liquids production in the initial years.

The Duva field development was carried out despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with production starting ahead of initial expectations.
