Ebok Oil Field Profile
Location and Geology
- The Ebok oil field is located in the offshore waters of Nigeria, specifically within the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 67.
- It is situated in a shallow-water environment.
Discovery and Ownership
- The Ebok oil field was discovered in 1968 by an ExxonMobil/NNPC joint venture.
- In May 2007, Oriental Energy Resources assumed ownership of the field. Afren later signed a farm-in agreement with Oriental Energy in March 2008 to participate in the field's development.
Development Phases
- Phase 1: Began in December 2009, targeting the central area of the field. This phase involved drilling a water injection well and six horizontal production wells, with three of the five production wells completed and flow tested by December 2010. The initial production rate was around 15,800 b/d, with a target of up to 17,000 b/d.
- Phase 2: Focuses on the West Fault Block area. This phase includes the installation of a second dedicated wellhead platform, four horizontal producers, and two water injectors. By the end of 2011, four of the five planned development wells were drilled and completed, with an anticipated full production capacity of around 20,000 b/d from these wells.
Drilling and Appraisal
- Following the initial discovery, appraisal wells Ebok-2 and Ebok-3 were drilled in 1970. Further appraisal and development were delayed until 2008.
- The Ebok-4 appraisal well, drilled in 2008-2009, encountered a gross oil column of 284ft in high-quality reservoir sands. The Ebok-5 well, drilled in 2009, encountered a 54ft gross oil column in the D series reservoirs.
Infrastructure
- The major infrastructure includes two 12-slot well-head platforms: the Veer Prem mobile offshore production unit (MOPU) and the Virini Prem floating storage offloading vessel (FSO).
- The Veer Prem MOPU has a production capacity of 50,000 bpd, a water injection capacity of 25,000 bwpd, and gas lift/injection capacity of 9mmcfd/6mmcfd. It also includes an accommodation unit for 30 staff and a helideck.
- The Virini Prem FSO has a storage capacity of 1.2 million barrels and is used to store and offload crude oil processed by the Veer Prem MOPU.
Production
- Production at the Ebok field began in February 2011 at an initial rate of 3,300 bopd. By January 2012, production had increased to 40,000 bopd with all initial phase wells online.
- As of 2011, Phase 1 production was at 15,800 b/d, with water injection operating at a stabilized rate of roughly 18,000 b/d from two wells.
- Recent production data indicates that the field produced around 4.19 million barrels of crude oil per year in 2021 and 7.63 million barrels per year in 2022.
Reserves
- The Ebok oil field has estimated 2P (proven and probable) reserves of 87.2 million barrels of oil as of 2015.
Future Development
- Afren and its partners planned to drill an exploration well on Ebok North, an untested fault block in the northern area of the field, which could hold reserves of 35 MMbbl. Another exploration well was planned for the Ufon prospect in the OML 115 lease.
- The nearby Okwok field has been established as a future commercial development, with plans for a dedicated production installation and further appraisal wells.
Seismic Surveys and Exploration
- An ocean bottom cable 3D seismic survey was completed over the Ebok/Okwok/OML 115 area in 2011 to assist in future development and exploration plans.
