Location

The Egret oil field is situated approximately 45 km north-west of Seria, in the Belait District of Brunei. It is located in the South China Sea at a water depth of about 60 meters.

History

The Egret oil field was first discovered in 1971, but it was initially deemed non-commercial. However, with the need to supply the Brunei LNG plant in Lumut, Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) planned a development project for the field. The development was planned in two phases, with Phase 1 starting in 2001 and 2002, and Phase 2 anticipated to be completed by 2006. The actual extraction of oil and gas began in 2006.

Platforms and Infrastructure

The main infrastructure for the Egret field includes the EGDP-01 platform, which serves as the central complex for the field. The gases and oil extracted from the Egret field are transported via pipelines to the Brunei LNG plant, with the gases passing through the South West Ampa gas field.

Operations

The Egret field is operated by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP). The development of the field involved significant investment, with the total development cost estimated at US$79 million. The Phase 1 project alone cost US$22 million and was planned to be completed by August 2003.

Production and Reserves

The Egret field was predicted to produce an estimated 30 million barrels of oil over a period of 15-20 years. The field's production is crucial for supplying the Brunei LNG plant, which is a key facility for Brunei's energy sector.

Environmental and Technical Considerations

While specific environmental details for the Egret field are not extensively outlined, the broader context of oil and gas operations in the region involves stringent environmental regulations and safety measures. The project's execution would have adhered to industry standards and local regulatory requirements to ensure minimal environmental impact.

In summary, the Egret oil field is an important oil and gas project for Brunei, operated by Brunei Shell Petroleum, and plays a vital role in supporting the country's energy production and LNG exports.
