Eldfisk Oil and Gas Field Profile
Location and Geology
- The Eldfisk oil and gas field is located in the Norwegian North Sea, approximately 300km off the coast, at a water depth of about 70 meters.
- It is part of the Greater Ekofisk Area and lies 16km south of the Ekofisk field.
- The reservoir consists of naturally fractured chalk from the late Cretaceous and early Paleocene age, with oil-bearing layers in the Hod, Tor, and Ekofisk formations. The reservoir rocks are highly porous with low permeability, facilitated by natural fracturing.
Discovery and Development
- The Eldfisk field was discovered in 1970, and the original plan for development and operation was approved in 1975. Production began in 1979.
- The field has undergone several development phases, including the initial development which included the Eldfisk B, Eldfisk A, and Eldfisk FTP platforms. A plan for water injection was approved in 1997, and the Eldfisk E injection facility was completed in 1999.
Eldfisk II Redevelopment Project
- In 2011, the Norwegian Parliament approved the Eldfisk II Redevelopment Project. This project involved the construction of a new integrated platform, Eldfisk 2/7 S, which was connected to the existing platforms via bridges. The project included new pipelines, electrical and control cables, and the drilling of 30 new production wells, nine additional water injectors, and one well for returning drill cuttings below ground. The project aimed to increase output and extend the field life up to 2050.
Eldfisk North Project
- The Eldfisk North Project is a recent development aimed at unlocking additional resources within the Eldfisk field. The project received approval from the Norwegian authorities in December 2022, with first oil production starting ahead of schedule in the second quarter of 2024.
- The project involves three 6-well subsea templates located approximately seven kilometers from the Eldfisk Complex. It includes up to 14 wells, with nine production wells and five water injection wells. The project utilizes the existing infrastructure and spare processing and transportation capacity of the Eldfisk complex to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Production and Reserves
- The Eldfisk field is one of the largest oil fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. As of December 2022, it is estimated to contain recoverable reserves of 27.9 million cubic meters of oil, 4.11 billion cubic meters of gas, and 900,000 tons of natural gas liquids.
- The Eldfisk North Project is expected to produce 15,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day at peak and holds an estimated 50-90 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Infrastructure
- The Eldfisk field comprises several platforms: Eldfisk 2/7 A (combined living quarters, drilling, and production), Eldfisk 2/7 FTP (process platform), Eldfisk 2/7 B (combined drilling, wellhead, and process platform), Eldfisk 2/7 E (gas processing), and the new Eldfisk 2/7 S (integrated accommodation, wellhead, and process platform).
- Oil produced from the field is transported through the Norpipe oil pipeline to Teesside, UK, while gas is transported through the Norpipe gas pipeline to Emden, Germany.
Ownership and Operators
- The field is operated by ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS with a 35.112% interest. Other stakeholders include TotalEnergies EP Norge AS (39.896%), Vår Energi ASA (12.388%), Sval Energi AS (7.604%), and Petoro AS (5%).
Environmental and Economic Impact
- The Eldfisk North Project has a low break-even point and estimated greenhouse gas emissions of 7 kg CO₂ per barrel of oil equivalent, aligning with sustainability goals.
- The project has created approximately 4,000-4,500 jobs, with more than 80% of the total contract value awarded to Norwegian businesses.
Contractors and Suppliers
- Key contractors involved in the Eldfisk North Project include Aker Solutions, which supplied the subsea production system, including vertical subsea trees, wellheads, and six-slot templates with integrated manifolds.
Investment and Timeline
- The total capital expenditure for the Eldfisk North Project is estimated at approximately NOK 13 billion (USD 1.24 billion).
- The project received regulatory approval in December 2022, with first oil production starting in the second quarter of 2024, ahead of the original schedule.
