Location and Concession

The Fenix gas field is situated 60 kilometers off the coast of Tierra del Fuego in Southern Argentina. It is part of the Cuenca Marina Austral 1 (CMA-1) concession, which has been operated by TotalEnergies through its affiliate Total Austral since the 1990s.

Project Partners

The project is operated by TotalEnergies with a 37.5% interest. The other partners are:

  • Harbour Energy (or Wintershall Dea in some sources, indicating a possible partnership change): 37.5%
  • Pan American Energy (or Pan American Sur): 25%.

Production and Capacity

The Fenix gas field has a production capacity of 10 million cubic meters per day, which is equivalent to 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d). This production level represents about 8% of Argentina's current gas production.

Infrastructure and Development

  • Platform: The project involves an unmanned wellhead platform installed in 70 meters of water depth. The platform is supported by a four-legged jacket and includes facilities for future subsea wells.
  • Wells: Three horizontal production wells are being drilled from the platform using a jack-up drilling rig, such as the Noble rig Regina Allen.
  • Pipeline: The gas produced is transported through a 35-kilometer subsea multiphase pipeline to the existing TotalEnergies-operated Véga Pléyade platform. From there, it is treated onshore at the Río Cullen and Cañadon Alfa facilities.
  • Processing: After treatment, the gas is injected into the San Martín gas pipeline.

Environmental and Cost Profile

  • Carbon Intensity: The Fenix project has a low carbon intensity of 9 kg CO2e/boe, aligning with TotalEnergies' low-cost and low-emission strategy. The project leverages existing infrastructure and incorporates technologies like heat recovery systems and wind farms to reduce emissions.
  • Investment: The total investment for the Fenix development is approximately $706 million.

Timeline and Milestones

  • Final Investment Decision (FID): The FID was taken in September 2022.
  • Platform Installation: The installation of the platform was completed in early 2024, with the jacket and deck installed in two phases.
  • Drilling Program: The development drilling program started in June 2024, with three horizontal wells planned.
  • Production Start: Production from the Fenix gas field began on September 20, 2024, just two years after the FID.

Long-Term Impact

The Fenix project is expected to produce gas for more than 15 years, contributing significantly to Argentina's long-term energy supply and helping reduce the country's energy imports.

Contractors and Suppliers

  • Corinth Pipeworks: Selected for manufacturing and supplying the steel pipes for the gas export pipeline.
  • Rosetti Marino: Awarded the engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) contract for the offshore wellhead platform.

This project underscores TotalEnergies' commitment to sustainable and reliable energy supply in Argentina, leveraging its extensive experience and infrastructure in the region.
