Fenja Oil and Gas Field Profile

Location

The Fenja Oil and Gas Field is located in the Norwegian Sea, approximately 120 km north of Kristiansund on the western coast of Norway. It is situated within production license PL586, in blocks 6406/11 and 6406/12, about 35 kilometers southwest of the Njord field. The field is in 325 meters deep waters.

Discovery and Approval

The Fenja field, which includes the Pil and Bue discoveries, was identified in 2014. The plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved by the Norwegian authorities in April 2018.

Operators and Ownership

The project is operated by Neptune Energy Norge AS, which holds a 30% participating interest. The other partners include:

  • Vår Energi AS (45.0%)
  • Suncor Energy Norge AS (17.5%)
  • DNO Norge AS (7.5%).

Development Details

  • Subsea Development: The field is developed using two subsea templates with a total of six wells (three production wells, two water injection wells, and one gas injection well). These wells are tied back to the Njord A semi-submersible floating production platform.
  • Pipeline and Umbilicals: The wellstream is transported to the Njord A platform through a 36 km-long electrically trace-heated subsea pipe-in-pipe, one of the longest of its kind. Additionally, there are 36 km-long umbilicals and separate water and gas injection flowlines.
  • Drilling Operations: The drilling campaign, which started in April 2020, involves a dual drilling operation using Seadrill’s semisubmersible West Phoenix drilling rig. This was the first dual drilling subsea operation in the world.

Production

  • Start of Production: Production at the Fenja field began in April 2023, after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Initial expectations were for production to start in the first quarter of 2021, later revised to the fourth quarter of 2021 and then early 2022.
  • Plateau Production: The field has a plateau production capacity of approximately 40,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Reserves

  • The total reserves for the Fenja field are estimated at about 97 million barrels of oil equivalent (mboe). The reserves include:
    • Oil: 50.76 million barrels
    • Natural Gas Liquids (NGL): 5.22 million barrels
    • Gas: 2,640 million cubic meters.

Reservoir

The reservoirs contain oil and gas in sandstone of Late Jurassic age in the Melke Formation and oil in Upper Jurassic sandstone in the Rogn Formation. The reservoirs are located at a depth of 3200-3500 meters and have variable reservoir properties.

Recovery Strategy

The field is produced with pressure support from water and gas injection. Produced gas is reinjected into the reservoir and will be produced at the end of the oil production period.

Transport

  • Oil: The oil is stored at the Njord B facility before being transferred to shuttle tankers.
  • Gas: The gas is exported via the Åsgard Transport System (ÅTS).

Field Life

The expected field life of the Fenja field is approximately 16 years.

Costs

The development of the Fenja oil field is estimated to cost approximately £935 million ($1.2 billion).

Contractors and Partners

  • TechnipFMC: Awarded an integrated Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (iEPCI) contract for the provision of subsea equipment, including umbilicals, risers, flowlines, and the subsea production system.

Njord A Platform

The Njord A semi-submersible floating production platform, which handles oil and gas from the Njord field as well as the Fenja field, underwent upgrades to its hull and topsides. The platform resumed production in the second half of 2021 after being suspended in 2016 for these upgrades.

Additional Notes

  • The Fenja project is Neptune Energy’s first own-operated development project on the Norwegian Shelf.
  • The project involves innovative technologies, including the longest electrically trace-heated subsea pipeline in the world.
