Glenlivet Gas Field Profile

Location

The Glenlivet gas field is located in the West of Shetland area, approximately 90km north-west of the Shetland Islands, UK. It is situated in UK Production License P1195 on Block 214/30, at a water depth of about 435 meters (or 1,430 feet).

Discovery and Development

  • The Glenlivet gas field was discovered in September 2009 by DONG E&P (now part of Ørsted). The discovery well, 214/30A-2, was drilled to a total depth of 7,654 feet using the Transocean Rather semi-submersible drilling rig. The well encountered gas pay in Paleocene sandstone, and two sidetracks were drilled to evaluate the size and extent of the field.

Ownership and Operation

  • The field is operated by TotalEnergies E&P UK, which holds a 60% interest. The other partners are DONG E&P (UK) Limited (20%) and SSE E&P UK Limited (20%).

Field Development

  • The development of the Glenlivet field involves the drilling of two wells from a semi-submersible drilling rig and the installation of two Xmas trees at the drill center. A single four-slot manifold is installed on the seabed adjacent to the two wells.
  • The field is tied back to the existing Laggan-Tormore production flowlines through a new 35km-long, 12in-diameter production line linked at the In-Line Tee 3 (ILT3) tie-in point of the flowlines. Additionally, a new 18km-long, 6in-diameter supply line with a 2in piggy-backed service line is connected to the nearby Edradour Area Development to provide monoethylene glycol (MEG) and service fluids to prevent hydrate formation.
  • A new 19.2km-long combined power, communications, hydraulic, and chemical umbilical links the Glenlivet manifold with that of the Edradour field.

Production

  • Production from the Glenlivet field began in August 2017, ahead of schedule and 30% under the initial budget.
  • The field, along with the Edradour field, adds up to 56,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) to the production capacity. Peak production from the Glenlivet field alone was anticipated to be around 21,000 boe/d.
  • The production life of the field is estimated to be around 15 years, although economic assumptions suggest production could continue until 2039 when the field reaches its economic limit.

Production and Processing

  • The fluids produced from the Glenlivet reservoir are mixed with those from the Laggan-Tormore and Edradour fields and processed together at the Shetland Gas Plant (SGP) in Sullom Voe. The SGP includes mercury removal units to eliminate mercury from the condensate.
  • The processed gas is exported to the UK mainland via the Shetland Island Regional Gas Export (SIRGE) pipeline and the FUKA gas pipeline system. The condensates are exported via the Sullom Voe Terminal.

Reserves

  • The field contains recoverable resources estimated at 33 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).
  • As of 2019, the field's annual production was approximately 1,287.95 million cubic meters of gas and 0.49 million barrels of oil.

Infrastructure

  • The development includes a 35km tie-back of three subsea wells to the existing Laggan-Tormore production system, which includes a 143km pipeline and the onshore Shetland Gas Plant.

In summary, the Glenlivet gas field is a significant addition to the UK's oil and gas production, operated efficiently by TotalEnergies E&P UK in partnership with DONG E&P and SSE E&P UK, and integrated into the broader Laggan-Tormore production system.
