Gryphon Redevelopment Oil and Gas Field Profile

Location

The Gryphon Redevelopment Oil and Gas Field is located offshore in the United Kingdom, specifically in Quad 9, approximately 201 miles northeast of Aberdeen. The field is primarily situated in block 9/18b, with a small portion extending into block 9/18c. The water depth at the site is approximately 112 meters (or 476 feet).

Discovery and Production History

  • The field was discovered in 1987.
  • Production began in October 1993.
  • Oil production peaked in 1995, reaching around 50,000 barrels per day.

Current Status and Redevelopment

  • As of 2022, the field has produced 137.5 million barrels of oil and 123 billion cubic feet (21.2 million barrels of oil equivalent) since 1993, which accounts for 99.31% of its total recoverable reserves.
  • The field is currently in the redevelopment phase, focusing on extracting gas from the mature oil field. Production from the gas redevelopment is expected to commence in 2025, once the remaining recoverable oil has been produced.

Ownership and Operation

  • The field is operated by TotalEnergies E&P North Sea UK Limited, which holds an 86.5% equity interest.
  • Sojitz Energy Development Limited holds the remaining 13.5% equity interest.

Infrastructure

  • The field is serviced by the Gryphon Alpha floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) facility.
  • The FPSO has subsea tiebacks from the Tullich, Maclure, and Ballindalloch developments.
  • The facility includes two three-phase separators, a coalescer, and other processing facilities. Gas is exported via the Leadon pipeline to the Beryl Alpha platform and then transported to shore via the SAGE system.

Production Capacities

  • Maximum separation capacities: 60,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd), 79,300 barrels of water per day (bwpd), and 47.5 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of gas.
  • Oil export storage capacity: 540,000 barrels.
  • Gas export: 40 mmscf/d.
  • Gas lift: 2.5 mmscf/d per well.
  • Produced water handling: 79,300 bwpd.

Decommissioning Plans

  • A decommissioning project for the Gryphon Alpha FPSO and associated infrastructure is planned to start in 2024, with a two-year project timeline.
  • The decommissioning includes the full removal of the FPSO, flexible risers, dynamic umbilicals, mooring lines, and anchors. All wells will need to be shut in and made safe prior to the decommissioning activities.

Field Participation and Connected Fields

  • The Gryphon field is connected to other fields such as Tullich, Maclure, and Ballindalloch, all of which are serviced by the Gryphon Alpha FPSO.
  • TotalEnergies E&P North Sea UK also operates other fields in the region, including Dumbarton, Balloch, Lochranza, Janice, Affleck, and James fields.

Remaining Reserves and Future Production

  • As of 2022, the remaining economically recoverable volumes of hydrocarbons are estimated at 35 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).
  • Production from the Gryphon field is expected to continue until it reaches its economic limit in 2027.
