Frederic C. Hamilton was born on September 25, 1927, in Columbus, Ohio, but spent much of his childhood in Springfield, Illinois. He was educated at Millbrook and Lawrenceville Schools and later at Babson College. Hamilton also served in the United States Air Force.

Hamilton began his career in the oil fields of Texas as a roughneck and roustabout. In 1950, he and his brother Ferris started Hamilton Brothers Drilling Company in Dallas, Texas, with a $5,000 loan from their mother. This company eventually evolved into Hamilton Brothers Oil Company in 1962 and moved to Denver.
Hamilton Oil Corporation
In the late 1960s, Frederic C. Hamilton founded Hamilton Oil Corporation, which he built into an international oil company and a domestic gas company.
