Location and Operators

The Ha'py field is located offshore in the Egyptian sector of the Mediterranean Sea. It is operated by PhPC, a joint venture company established between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), BP, and the Italian Egyptian Oil Company (IEOC).

History and Production

  • The Ha'py field started production in 2000. Initially, it produced up to 420 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of natural gas.
  • As of the latest available data, the production has declined to 290 mmscf/d due to natural reservoir depletion.

Geology and Reservoir Characteristics

  • The Ha'py field includes shale and sandstone formations in its lithological composition. The Ha'py-2 well, for example, shows a mix of these formations.
  • The field is part of the Nile Delta basin, which has been a focus area for natural gas exploration and production. The discoveries in this basin, including the Ha'py field, have been significant for the region's energy sector.

Infrastructure and Facilities

  • The natural gas produced from the Ha'py field is exported to the onshore PhPC West Harbor Plant via 30” and 20” pipelines. Associated condensate and free water are also transported with the gas.
  • At the West Harbor Plant, the gas is processed and then directed to the national gas grid. To maintain production rates, the West Harbor Expansion Project (WHX Project) was initiated, which includes upgrades such as the installation of an additional high-pressure (HP) compression unit, utility upgrades, and improvements to safety systems, electrical and control systems, and wastewater treatment facilities.

Objectives and Development Plan

  • The primary objective of the WHX Project is to ensure that the West Harbour Facilities can process, maintain, and deliver the target production rates from the Ha'py and Taurt fields. The target is to achieve a maximum of 585 MMSCFD from the Ha'py field.
  • The project aims to improve reliability, availability, and safety of the WHX plants, enhance functionality and efficiency, and maintain high-quality processing and production rates. It also focuses on developing skills and training among Egyptian staff and maintaining beneficial relationships with partners like BP and EGAS.

Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE)

  • The WHX Project adheres to stringent HSE standards, with the goal of "No accidents – No harm to people – No damage to the Environment." This includes the implementation of new fire prevention and detection systems, improved waste water treatment policies, and adherence to industry best practices and relevant legislation.

Project Management

  • The Pharaonic Project Management System (PPMS) is used to manage the WHX Project and other initiatives. PPMS ensures sound management methods, compliance with regulations, and sophisticated quality control and inspection systems to maintain operational and technical integrity at the highest industry standards.

In summary, the Ha'py gas field is a significant natural gas production site in the Mediterranean Sea, operated by PhPC, with a focus on maintaining production rates through infrastructure upgrades and adherence to strict HSE and project management standards.
