Idd El Shargi North Dome (ISND) Oil and Gas Field Profile

Location

The Idd El Shargi North Dome (ISND) oil and gas field is located offshore Qatar, approximately 85-87 kilometers east of Doha, in the shallow waters of the Arabian/Persian Gulf. The field is situated at a water depth of about 35 meters (or 92 feet).

Discovery and Production

The ISND field was discovered in 1960 by Shell and began production in 1964. Initially, the field was developed using vertical wells, but due to the low permeability of the reservoir, production declined significantly by 1994.

Operators and Ownership

The field is currently operated by QatarEnergy, although from 1994 onwards, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy) has played a significant role in the development and operation of the field under a Development and Production Sharing Agreement (DPSA) with the State of Qatar. QatarEnergy is the owner of the field.

Geology and Reservoirs

The ISND field produces a mix of heavy-to-medium sour crude oil and associated gas from Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic carbonates. The field is part of a larger structure that includes two elliptical domes: the North Dome and the smaller South Dome.

Production and Reserves

  • The field has seen various phases of development aimed at enhancing oil recovery. By 1994, production had dropped to 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d). However, with the introduction of horizontal drilling and water injection by Oxy, production was significantly increased. By 2008, the combined production from ISND and the neighboring Idd el-Shargi South Dome (ISSD) reached 47,000 boe/d.
  • In recent years, the field has produced around 22.53 million barrels of oil per year (2020 data) and 465.1 million cubic meters of gas per year (2020 data).
  • The field is estimated to have recovered 72.82% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production in 1998. Production is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2059.

Development Phases

The development of ISND has been carried out in multiple phases:

  • Phase 1 (1995-2001): Focused on drilling and subsea facilities.
  • Phase 2 (2002-2005): Continued drilling and subsea development.
  • Phase 3 (2008-2012): Further drilling and subsea facilities.
  • Phase 4 (2011-2013): Aimed at delineating and postponing the depletion of mature reservoirs.
  • Phase 5 (2013 onwards): Targets a plateau production of 100,000 barrels per day over the next six years. This phase includes digital oil field simulation models, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, additional production and water injection wells, and new processing facilities.

Expansion Projects

Current expansion projects include:

  • ISND Phase 5: Involves a $3 billion capital expenditure to enhance production. This includes the development of a 100,000 bpd field, central processing platforms, additional wells, and advanced water injection techniques.
  • ISND Phase 5.2: Currently in the commissioning and feed stage.

Contractors and Services

Several contractors are involved in the development and operation of the ISND field:

  • Design/FEED Engineering: John Wood Group, Worley, and Technip Energies.
  • Main EPC: Eni, Black Cat Engineering & Construction, and China Offshore Oil Engineering.
  • Other Contractors: Halul Offshore Services, Altrad Investment Authority, Borr Drilling, Bombora-ESP, and Jaidah Energy.

Infrastructure

The field development includes:

  • Central processing platforms.
  • Wellhead jackets.
  • Processing facilities.
  • Pipelines system.
  • Additional water source wells and water injection wells.

Economic and Regulatory Aspects

The field's operations are subject to the fiscal and regulatory terms of Qatar, including royalty and corporate income tax. The economic analysis of the field involves cash flow projections, discount rates, and oil price assumptions.

In summary, the Idd El Shargi North Dome (ISND) oil and gas field is a significant offshore field in Qatar, operated by QatarEnergy with substantial involvement from Occidental Petroleum Corporation. The field has undergone multiple phases of development to enhance production and is expected to continue producing until 2059.
