Jubarte Oil Field Profile

Location and Geology

  • The Jubarte oil field is located in the Campos Basin, specifically within the Parque das Baleias region of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. It is situated in the pre-salt layer of the basin, at a water depth of approximately 1,385 meters (4,544 feet).

Discovery and History

  • The Jubarte field was discovered in 2001 by Petrobras, the state-owned oil company of Brazil.
  • Production above the salt layer began in 2006, and production in the pre-salt layer started in 2008.
  • Over the years, several contracts have been awarded to various companies for the development of the field, including Keppel for FPSO conversion, Aker for subsea boosting systems, Oceaneering for pump umbilicals, and PGS for permanent seismic monitoring.

Production and Infrastructure

  • The field is produced using multiple FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading units). Initially, production was facilitated by the FPSO P-34 and later by the FPSO P-57 and FPSO Cidade de Anchieta.
  • The latest addition is the FPSO Maria Quitéria, which began production in October 2024. This FPSO has the capacity to produce up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day and process up to 5 million cubic meters of natural gas daily. It is connected to eight production wells and eight injection wells.
  • The FPSO Maria Quitéria is equipped with technologies aimed at reducing operational greenhouse gas emissions by about 24% and improving efficiency. It stands 156 meters tall and 333 meters long.

Field Architecture and Technology

  • The Jubarte field involves both conventional and pre-salt reservoirs. The pre-salt reservoir is produced via the FPSO Cidade de Anchieta, while the conventional reservoir is produced using the FPSO P-57.
  • The field utilizes advanced technologies such as electric submersible pumps (ESPs) located at the seabed to boost fluid to the surface. These ESPs were introduced during Phase II of the field development, which started in December 2010.
  • Gas from the field is transported via the Sul-Norte Capixaba Gas Pipeline to the onshore Cacimbas Gas Treatment Unit (UTGC).

Production Volume and Contribution

  • The Jubarte field is one of the significant oil producers offshore Brazil. With the addition of the FPSO Maria Quitéria, this unit is projected to contribute approximately 40% of the field’s total production when fully operational.

Environmental and Efficiency Measures

  • The FPSO Maria Quitéria is designed with technologies to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for a 24% reduction. It also has the capacity to generate 100 MW of energy, sufficient to supply a city of 230,000 inhabitants.

Concession and Partners

  • Petrobras is the sole holder of the production rights for the Jubarte field. In 2019, Petrobras and the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) extended the concession term for the unified Jubarte field until 2056, enabling the deployment of the FPSO Maria Quitéria and other related projects.

Parque das Baleias Integrated Project

  • The Jubarte field is part of the larger Parque das Baleias area, which includes several other fields such as Baleia Anã, Cachalote, Caxaréu, Pirambú, and Mangangá. Currently, three other platforms (P-57, P-58, and FPSO Cidade de Anchieta) are in operation within this area.

Future Plans

  • Petrobras plans to install 11 new production platforms in Brazil’s pre-salt layer by 2027, with the FPSO Maria Quitéria being one of them. The company will also invest $64 billion in exploration and production activities under its Strategic Plan for 2023–2027.
