Julimar-Brunello
- Type: Rig
- complex
- Latitude: -20.0314000
- Longitude: 115.1765000
Location
The Julimar-Brunello field is situated in the Carnarvon Basin, approximately 200 km offshore northwest of Western Australia. It is located within production licence (PL) WA-49-L in Commonwealth waters, about 48 km off the Montebello Islands.
Operators and Ownership
The project is operated by Woodside Energy Julimar Pty Ltd., a subsidiary of Woodside Energy, which holds a 65% interest. The remaining 35% interest is held by Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) Australia (Julimar) Pty Ltd..
Project Phases
Phase 1
The initial phase of the Julimar-Brunello Gas Field Development involved drilling activities, including the Brunello Topholes, which commenced in August 2012. This phase focused on developing hydrocarbons from the Mungaroo reservoirs for the Julimar/Wheatstone development project. The drilling did not penetrate hydrocarbon-bearing zones during this phase.
Phase 2
Phase two of the Julimar-Brunello development involved a subsea development tied back to the existing Brunello subsea infrastructure connected to the Chevron-operated Wheatstone platform. The project included the drilling of seven wells: an exploratory well, a potential appraisal well, and five production wells. The development activities were expected to be completed by 2022. The hydrocarbons are transported to the Wheatstone project’s onshore facility, which includes two LNG trains with a combined capacity of 8.9 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), a domestic gas facility, and related infrastructure.
Phase 3
Woodside Energy confirmed a positive final investment decision (FID) for the Julimar-Brunello Phase 3 project in April 2023. This phase will provide a new supply of gas to the Chevron-operated Wheatstone LNG plant. TechnipFMC has been awarded a contract to engineer, procure, construct, and install flexible pipes and umbilicals for this phase. The project involves tying back four subsea gas wells to the existing Julimar subsea infrastructure.
Phase 4
While not as extensively detailed, Phase 4 is mentioned as part of the expansion projects associated with the Julimar Brunello conventional gas field, currently in the feasibility stage.
Infrastructure and Production
- The Julimar field production system, commissioned in 2016, operates at water depths ranging between 71m and 174m. It includes up to 14 Julimar and Brunello wells, three production manifolds, and associated subsea infrastructure such as Xmas trees, flowlines, and umbilicals.
- The hydrocarbons from the Wheatstone platform are transported to the onshore facility at the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area, which includes two LNG trains and a domestic gas facility.
- The Julimar-Brunello fields supply about 20% of the total raw gas demand to the Wheatstone project, with the remaining gas provided by the Chevron-operated Wheatstone and Iago fields.
Contractors and Services
- ICON Engineering assisted in the deployment of subsea infrastructure for Phase 2.
- John Wood Group provided engineering and rig modification services for Phase 2.
- Subsea7 performed offshore activities for Phase 2, including the installation of a gas transmission flowline and an umbilical system.
- Airborne Oil & Gas supplied thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) jumpers for Phase 2.
- TechnipFMC has been contracted for the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of flexible pipes and umbilicals for Phase 3.
Environmental and Regulatory Aspects
- The project's environmental plans have been reviewed and accepted by the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA). For example, the revised environment plan for Phase 2 was accepted by NOPSEMA in March 2021.
Production and Reserves
- The Julimar Brunello conventional gas field has recovered 29.76% of its total recoverable reserves as of recent data. Peak production is expected in 2029, and production is anticipated to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2042. The field currently accounts for approximately 2% of Australia’s daily gas output.
