Kalamkas Oil Field Profile
Location
The Kalamkas Oil Field is located in two distinct areas:
- The onshore field is situated in the Mangistau Region in western Kazakhstan.
- The offshore component, known as the Kalamkas-Sea field, is located in the central part of the North-Eastern part of the Caspian Sea, with sea depths ranging from 7-8 meters.
Operator and Ownership
- The onshore Kalamkas Oil Field is operated by Mangistaumunaigaz AO (MMG), a subsidiary of KazMunayGas and China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC).
- The offshore Kalamkas-Sea field is jointly developed by JSC NC KazMunayGas and PJSC Lukoil, with each company holding a 50% stake in the Kalamkas-Khazar Operating LLC.
History and Discovery
- The onshore Kalamkas Oil Field was discovered in 1976, with the first production starting in 1979.
- The offshore Kalamkas-Sea field saw the successful completion of its first exploration well in 2002.
Production and Reserves
- Onshore Field:
- The field has recoverable oil reserves of approximately 449.52 million barrels as of 2017.
- Total balance oil reserves are estimated at 3,391.35 million barrels, though the exact data year is not specified.
- Production peaked in 2015, and based on economic assumptions, it is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2068. Currently, it accounts for about 3% of Kazakhstan's daily oil output.
- Offshore Kalamkas-Sea Field:
- Estimated reserves include 81 million tons of recoverable oil and 22 billion cubic meters of recoverable gas.
- The general reserves of hydrocarbons in the offshore field are estimated at 104 million tons, with 41 million tons being recoverable.
Geology
- The offshore Kalamkas-Sea field features several hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Jurassic section, starting from a depth of about 1,617 meters.
- The field is described as a long and narrow anticline, approximately 50 km long and up to 6 km wide.
Infrastructure and Development
- Onshore Field:
- Mangistaumunaigaz AO uses advanced exploration technologies such as progressive cavity pumps and hydro fracturing.
- Offshore Kalamkas-Sea Field:
- The field is in the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage, with the joint development project scheduled to run from 2022 to 2028.
- The project involves significant investments of about $6.4 billion and is expected to create 2,000 new jobs during the design and development stage and 200 jobs during operation.
Partners and Agreements
- The offshore project involves PJSC Lukoil and JSC NC KazMunayGas as equal partners in the Kalamkas-Khazar Operating LLC.
- Other partners in the broader North Caspian Oil and Gas Project include ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch/Shell, Total, and ConocoPhillips, although their specific roles in the Kalamkas field may vary.
Current Status
- The onshore field is in continuous production since 1979 and is managed by Mangistaumunaigaz AO.
- The offshore Kalamkas-Sea field is in the development phase, with FEED currently in progress and expected to be completed by 2028.
