  • field

Location and Geology

  • The Kilmar field is located in the Southern Basin of the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), specifically in Block 43/22a.
  • It is situated approximately 94 kilometers offshore to the northeast of the nearest landfall at Flamborough Head, on the east coast of England. The nearest international boundary is the UK/Dutch median line, about 95 kilometers to the east.

Discovery and Development

  • The Kilmar field was discovered in 1992 by appraisal well 43/22-1 and confirmed in 1994 by a second appraisal well 43/22-2.
  • Alpha Petroleum acquired 100% equity in the field from BP in 2001 and later from GDF in 2004. Alpha subsequently sold interests to Sojitz in 2005 and Edison in 2008.
  • The field was developed with a Normally Unmanned Installation (NUI) platform, which was installed in 2005. Three production wells were drilled: 43/22a-K1w (K1), 43/22a-K2x (K2), and 43/22a-K3 (K3). The two appraisal wells were re-entered and side-tracked in 2006 to become production wells K1 and K2, while well K3 was drilled in 2007.

Production and Export

  • Gas production from the Kilmar field began in 2005 and was exported via the PL2162 pipeline to the Trent platform, and then to the ETS pipeline to Bacton, Norfolk.
  • The field produced approximately 69 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas up to the end of 2016. As of that time, there were estimated remaining recoverable gas reserves of about 46 bcf.

Infrastructure

  • The Kilmar NUI platform is a small steel platform with a fixed steel jacket, weighing 450 tonnes for the topside and 1,425 tonnes for the jacket. The platform has three wells and is located at a water depth of about 54.8 meters.
  • The gas export pipeline (PL2162) is a 12-inch pipeline, and there is also a 3-inch service pipeline (PL2163) for supplying Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) for hydrate and corrosion inhibition. Both pipelines were installed simultaneously into the same protection trench.

Decommissioning

  • The Kilmar field ceased production on June 2, 2020, and is currently undergoing decommissioning. The decommissioning program, which is expected to take five years starting from 2024, includes the removal of the platform, pipelines, and other installations. The process involves public, stakeholder, and regulatory consultation and is in compliance with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) guidelines.

Operators and Stakeholders

  • The Field Operator for the Kilmar field is currently Energean UK Limited (EUL), with ODE Asset Management as the Installation and Pipelines Operator, and Exceed Torridon Limited as the Wells Operator.
