Layang Oil and Gas Field Profile

Location and Block Details

The Layang Oil and Gas Field is located offshore Sarawak, Malaysia, within Block SK10. It is situated approximately 8km east of the producing Helang gas field, also within the same block. The field is at a water depth of about 90 meters.

Operator and Ownership

The field is operated by JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (Malaysia) with a 75% working interest. The remaining 25% interest is held by Petronas Carigali, a subsidiary of Petronas.

Discovery and Production

The Layang field was discovered in 1991. The Field Development Plan (FDP) for Layang was approved by Petronas in May 2014. Initially, production was expected to start in mid-2016, but it actually began in 2019.

Field Development

The development of the Layang field involves several key components:

  • Unmanned Wellhead Platform (WHP): Connected to the Layang Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel via a subsea pipeline.
  • FPSO Vessel: The Layang FPSO, formerly known as the Deep Producer 1, is owned by Floatech, a subsidiary of TH Heavy Engineering Berhad. The FPSO is leased for a period of 7.5 years with ten one-year extension options. It is moored by an external bow-mounted turret system, allowing for permanent mooring and free weather-vaning capabilities.
  • Subsea Pipelines: Natural gas produced from the Layang and Helang fields is conveyed via approximately 200km of subsea pipelines to the Malaysia LNG Tiga’s (MLNG Tiga) liquefaction plant in Bintulu, Sarawak, for conversion into liquefied natural gas (LNG) before export. Condensate and oil are stored in the FPSO and shipped using tankers.

Production Capacity

The combined initial gas production capacity from the Layang and Helang fields is estimated at 100 million standard cubic feet per day (Mmscfd). The combined initial production capacity of condensate from both fields and oil from the Layang field is estimated to be 7,000 barrels per day.

Contractors and Services

Several contractors are involved in the development of the Layang field:

  • Front End Engineering Design (FEED): Blackstone Process Solutions is performing the FEED study for the modification of the Layang FPSO.
  • Design, Engineering, and Project Management: Global Mariner Offshore Services (GMOS) under a subcontract from TH Heavy Engineering Berhad.
  • Atmospheric Tanks: Supplied by Jurunature.
  • External Turret System: Awarded to the consortium of Orwell Offshore and FES International, with Orwell subcontracting Drydocks World for fabrication.
  • EPCC Contract: Awarded to SapuraKencana HL for the detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the field’s facilities.
  • Flexible Pipes: Technip was awarded a contract for the engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of three flexible pipes, including production risers, flowlines, and a gas export riser and flowline.

Infrastructure

  • Helang Central Processing Platform (HCP): Production from the Helang field, which started in November 2003, is facilitated by a single central processing platform.
  • Subsea Equipment: Installation of subsea equipment, including wellheads, manifolds, and pipelines, connects the wells to the FPSO vessel.

This comprehensive setup ensures the efficient production, processing, and export of oil and gas from the Layang field, integrating it with the existing infrastructure of the Helang field within Block SK10.
