Location

The Magallanes (Tierra del Fuego) oil and gas project is located in the Twelfth Region of Magallanes, specifically in the Tierra del Fuego Island and the continental area of Chile, not to be confused with the Magallanes field in Argentina.

Operator

The project is operated by ENAP (Empresa Nacional del Petróleo), the Chilean national oil company. ENAP is responsible for the exploration, production, and development activities in this region.

Operations

ENAP conducts extensive operations in the Magallanes region, including:

  • Exploration and production of hydrocarbon deposits.
  • Operation of gas and oil fields in the continental area and Tierra del Fuego Island.
  • Management of loading ports, oil pipelines, gas pipelines, and multi-product pipelines.
  • Maintenance of settlements such as Cerro Sombrero, Cullen, Posesión, and Gregorio, along with workshops, facilities, and warehouses.

Recent Activities

In recent years, ENAP has intensified its efforts to explore new gas fields, particularly in the Dorado-Riquelme and Arenal blocks. There is a renewed focus on exploring unconventional reservoirs, such as Tight Gas, to meet the growing demand for gas in the region.

Infrastructure and Contributions

ENAP has made significant contributions to the infrastructure and development of the Magallanes Region:

  • Established a network of thousands of kilometers of roads, crucial for livestock and tourism.
  • Set up schools in Manantiales, Cerro Sombrero, and Cullen, and promoted higher education institutions like INACAP and the Universidad de Magallanes.
  • Installed television and telecommunication repeater antennas.
  • Created a network of gas pipelines and supplied gas to cities like Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, Porvenir, and rural areas.

Workforce

The project directly employs around 1,100 employees, with a significant number of indirect jobs through contractor companies.

Investment

ENAP is set to make a historic investment of $649 million in the 2023-2027 period, primarily to ensure the gas supply to the cities in the region.

Special Oil Operation Contracts (CEOPs)

ENAP's operations in the region are also guided by the Special Oil Operation Contracts (CEOPs) signed in 2007 and the Tierra del Fuego CEOPs of 2010. These contracts have focused on the Arenal, Dorado-Riquelme, and Manzano blocks.
