Mpungi Oil Field Profile

Location

The Mpungi Oil Field is located offshore Angola, within Block 15/06 of the Angolan Deep Offshore. It is approximately 350 kilometres northwest of Luanda and 130 kilometres west of Soyo.

Coordinates

The exact coordinates for the Mpungi Oil Field are -6.0374, 11.1779 (WGS 84).

Water Depth

The field is situated in water depths ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters.

Project Details

  • Operator and Ownership: The field is operated by Eni S.P.A., which holds a 36.84% stake. The other partners in the joint venture are Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção (36.84%) and SSI Fifteen Limited (26.32%).
  • Discovery Year: The Mpungi field was discovered in 2010.
  • Production Start: Production from the Mpungi field began in January 2016.

West Hub Development Project

The Mpungi field is part of the West Hub Development Project, which also includes the Sangos, Cinguvu, Mpungi North, Ochigufu, and Vandumbu fields. This project is a significant development in the Angolan offshore sector:

  • Fields: The West Hub encompasses several fields, all connected to the N’Goma Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit.
  • FPSO: The N’Goma FPSO has a treatment capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil per day and a storage capacity of 1,500,000 barrels of oil.
  • Wells and Infrastructure: The project involves 21 subsea wells, grouped in clusters, which include 12 producers, 4 alternate water and gas injectors, and 5 water injectors. These wells are connected via flexible and rigid lines to the FPSO.

Production

  • Initial Production: The start-up of the Mpungi field contributed to a production ramp-up to approximately 100,000 barrels of oil per day in the first quarter of 2016.
  • Current Production: The field is part of a larger complex that, as of 2020, produced around 123,000 barrels of oil per day from the associated fields in the West and East Hub projects.

Technical and Operational Details

  • Drilling and Completion: The drilling campaign started in the second quarter of 2013, and by the time of the production start, 18 out of 21 wells had been pre-drilled. The wells use open hole gravel pack for producers and stand-alone screens with natural sand packing for injector wells. Upper completion includes downhole gas lift and chemical injection.
  • Subsea Layout: The subsea production system includes 56 km of rigid lines, 86 km of flexible lines, and various subsea structures such as manifolds and subsea distribution units.

Exploration and Future Development

  • Exploration Program: Eni continues its exploration program in Block 15/06, with plans to connect any new discoveries to the existing production infrastructure to reduce time and costs.
  • Future Fields: The discoveries of Mpungi North and Vandumbu are also planned to be integrated into the West Hub development.

Achievements and Milestones

  • On Budget and Schedule: The start-up of the Mpungi field was achieved both on budget and on schedule, reflecting Eni's efficiency, technology, and innovation in delivering major projects.
