Location and Geology
The Mungo oil field is located approximately 240 km east of Aberdeen, UK, in the Central North Sea. It straddles the boundary of Block 22/20 and 23/16a.
Field Characteristics
Mungo is described as a medium-sized oil field with an associated gas cap. It is one of the six fields operated by BP within the ETAP project.
Development History
Development drilling at Mungo was undertaken in several stages. Initially, five production wells and a gas injector were pre-drilled, along with a high-angle well used in the Mungo Extended Well test. In total, there were 13 development wells.
Production and Operations
The field is developed using a combination of production and injection wells. A normally unmanned platform is installed over the Mungo field to separate liquids from the gas. The liquids are then transported directly to the Central Processing Facility (CPF) via a 12-inch pipeline. Chemicals and electrical power for the Mungo platform are supplied via an umbilical from the CPF. A 16-inch wet gas line from the Mungo platform is routed to the CPF via the Monan field.
Technical Details
- Well Configuration: The development involved pre-drilling several wells, including production wells and a gas injector.
- Platform: The field uses a normally unmanned platform for processing and separating liquids from gas.
- Infrastructure: The platform is connected to the CPF via pipelines, and it receives necessary supplies through an umbilical.
Production Metrics
- Oil and Gas Production: Mungo is a significant contributor to the overall ETAP production. The ETAP project as a whole can handle up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) and exports approximately 440 million standard cubic feet (Mscf) of gas per day.
- Reserves: While specific reserves for Mungo alone are not detailed, the combined reserves for the ETAP project are estimated to be around 490 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMbbl), 35 MMbbl of natural gas condensate, and about 2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas.
Operators and Partners
The Mungo field is operated by BP as part of the ETAP project. Other partners in the ETAP project include Shell, which operates the Heron cluster, and Total, which has a stake in the Mungo and Monan fields through its acquisition of BHP Petroleum's share.
Current Status and Future Plans
The ETAP project, including the Mungo field, is undergoing a significant investment program to upgrade operations, with plans to extend production into the 2030s. BP’s Seagull field is also planned to be developed through the ETAP hub, further enhancing the project's production capabilities.
