Nang Nuan Oil and Gas Field Profile
Location
The Nang Nuan Oil and Gas Field is located offshore in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 35 kilometers off the coast of Chumphon province. The exact coordinates are around 10.041, 99.43 (WGS 84).
Operator and Ownership
The field is operated by PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) through its subsidiary PTTEP Siam Limited (PTTEPS), which holds 100% ownership of the field.
Discovery and Production History
- The Nang Nuan field was discovered in 1987.
- The Final Investment Decision (FID) details are not specified, but production began in 2005.
- Initial production tests, particularly from the Nang Nuan B-01 well, showed promising results. This well flowed 4,700 barrels per day (b/d) of waxy crude during a drillstem test in 1991.
Production and Reserves
- The Nang Nuan B-01 well has a potential productive capacity of 5,000-10,000 b/d. This is comparable to the earlier Nang Nuan A-02 well, which produced about 500,000 barrels of oil in six months before being suspended due to water coning.
- Preliminary reserves estimates for the Nang Nuan B-01 well are around 10-15 million barrels of oil.
Geology
- The field is situated in a karstified limestone structure within the same basin as other significant oil and gas fields.
- The reservoirs are characterized by Permian carbonates, which are known for their high hydrocarbon potential but also for their complexity due to extensive heterogeneity and the presence of large cavities (caves) that contribute to high productivity.
Production Testing and Development
- Production testing was underway in the early 1990s to assess the economics of placing the field on stream. The field was expected to be brought online in the first half of 1993.
Current Status
- As of the latest available data, the Nang Nuan Oil and Gas Field is in an operating status, managed by PTTEP Siam Limited.
Economic and Environmental Context
- The development of the Nang Nuan field is part of Thailand's broader strategy to enhance domestic energy production and reduce reliance on other fuels. Natural gas from such fields is used for power generation, which is considered a cleaner and more cost-effective option compared to other energy sources.
