Nene Marine (Phase 2B)

  • Type: Rig
  • field
  • Latitude: -4.5487000
  • Longitude: 11.5845000

Location and Terrain

The Nene Marine conventional oil field is located in the shallow waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of the Republic of Congo. Specifically, it is situated in blocks Marine XII, Marine XII A, and Nene Banga, with a water depth of approximately 92 feet.

Ownership and Operation

The Nene Marine field is operated by Eni Congo SA. The field is owned by a consortium that includes Eni, Lukoil Oil, and Societe Nationale des Petroles du Congo (SNPC).

Production History and Current Status

The Nene Marine field began production in 2015. As of the latest data, the field has recovered 41.97% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production achieved in 2020. The field currently accounts for approximately 7% of the Republic of Congo's daily oil output.

Production Projections

Based on economic assumptions, production from the Nene Marine field is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2042.

Associated Projects and Infrastructure

The Nene Marine field is part of the broader Marine XII concession, which also includes the Congo LNG project. This project involves the development of natural gas resources in the area, including the installation of floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) plants. The Tango FLNG unit, which is part of this project, started operations in February 2024 and is anchored near the Nene Marine field. This infrastructure allows for the processing and export of natural gas, in addition to oil production.

Technological and Environmental Aspects

The Congo LNG project, which includes the Nene Marine field, employs a zero-flaring technological approach to reduce fugitive methane emissions. This aligns with Eni’s decarbonization strategy and contributes to reducing the environmental impact of the operations.

Future Development

While the primary focus of the Nene Marine field has been on oil production, the ongoing and future phases of the Marine XII concession will see increased emphasis on natural gas production and liquefaction. The second phase of the Congo LNG project, which includes another FLNG unit, is currently under development and is expected to start operations in 2025. This will further enhance the production capacity of the area.

Economic Impact

The Nene Marine field and the associated LNG project are significant contributors to the Republic of Congo's economic growth. The export of LNG, particularly to Europe, diversifies the country's energy exports and enhances its position in the global energy market.

In summary, the Nene Marine oil field is a key component of the Republic of Congo's hydrocarbon sector, operated by Eni Congo SA, and is integrated into a broader strategy that includes natural gas production and liquefaction, aligning with both economic and environmental objectives.
