Reshadat Oil Field Profile

Location and Geography

The Reshadat Oil Field is located in the Persian Gulf, approximately 110 kilometers southwest of Lavan Island, Iran. It is situated in shallow water.

Discovery and Development History

  • The Reshadat oil field, previously known as the Rostam oil field before 1979, was discovered in 1965.
  • The field was developed by the Iranian-Italian company, IMINICO, and first brought on-stream in 1968.

Operator and Ownership

  • The field is operated by the Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC), a subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).

Production History and Impact of War

  • During the Iran-Iraq war in 1986, the central complex of the field (R7) was damaged and set ablaze by American warships. Following this, only the satellite wellhead platforms (R3 and R4) remained in use for oil extraction.

Redevelopment Project

  • The Reshadat oil field underwent a significant redevelopment project as part of Iran's "Mehr-e Mandegar" scheme to increase production capacity in the Persian Gulf oil fields.
  • The project involved the construction of new platforms, including:
    • One production platform (P4)
    • One quarters platform (Q4)
    • Two wellhead platforms (W4 and W0)
    • One flare platform (F4)
  • These new platforms, except for W0, are bridge-linked near the existing R4 platform. The existing R7, R3, and R4 platforms were abandoned upon the completion of the redevelopment project.

Infrastructure and Facilities

  • The P4 platform is the central hub where wellhead fluids are separated into oil, water, and gas.
  • New pipelines were installed, including a 16-inch diameter, 106km-long pipeline from the Reshadat oil field to Lavan Island for exporting quality blend oil. Additionally, three 5.5km long pipelines inside the field and two 12km-long offshore cable lines were installed.
  • A 55km pipeline was constructed to send flare gas to the Salman oilfield for processing.

Production Capacity and Reserves

  • The redevelopment project aimed to boost oil production significantly. By the end of 2013, production was expected to reach 22,000 barrels per day (bpd), and by 2016, it was projected to increase to 75,000 bpd.
  • The field has substantial reserves:
    • Original oil in place: 3,058.8 million barrels
    • Recoverable reserves: 507.3 million barrels
    • Condensate recoverable reserves: 70.4 million barrels.

Drilling and Injection

  • A total of 28 wells were drilled for water injection to improve oil recovery.
  • The project includes plans for a total of 30 wells to achieve the targeted production levels.

Contractors and Services

  • Several contractors were involved in the redevelopment project, including Iran Marine Industrial, Monenco Iran Consulting Engineers, Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction, and others.

Environmental Considerations

  • The field's operations are part of broader environmental management efforts in the Persian Gulf. There are ongoing initiatives to strengthen environmental management, including monitoring and response plans for oil spills and other environmental issues.

Current Status

  • The redevelopment project has been completed, with the installation of new jackets and platforms, and the commissioning of new facilities. The field is currently operating under the management of IOOC.

In summary, the Reshadat Oil Field is a significant offshore oil field in Iran, undergoing extensive redevelopment to enhance its production capacity and infrastructure, while also addressing environmental management concerns.
