Profile for Sanha/Bomboco Oil and Gas Project
Location
The Sanha/Bomboco oil and gas field is located offshore Cabinda, Angola, within Block 0. The field spans across areas A, B, and C of the Cabinda enclave, with water depths ranging from 75 meters to 200 meters.
Operators and Ownership
The project is operated by Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (Cabgoc), which is Chevron's Angolan affiliate. The ownership structure includes:
- Cabgoc (Chevron): 39.2%
- Sonangol: 41.0%
- TotalEnergies: 10.0%
- Eni S.P.A.: 9.8%.
Project Details
Discovery and Production
- The exact discovery year is not specified, but production began in 2005.
- The project involves the development of multiple fields, including Sanha, Bomboco, Malongo, Kambala/Livuite, Takula, Kokongo, North N'Dola, and South Sanha.
Production Capacity
- The combined production from Sanha and Bomboco fields is expected to reach an average annual peak of 100,000 barrels per day (b/d) of oil, condensate, and LPG by 2007.
- The overall production capacity for Block 0, which includes these fields, is around 450,000 b/d, accounting for half of Angola's current oil production.
Facilities and Infrastructure
Sanha Field:
- The central Sanha field features a new platform complex consisting of a process compression installation (PCP), a remote flare jacket, a drilling production platform, and a living quarters platform, all bridge-linked together.
- A cryogenic LPG plant on the PCP processes LPG, which is then sent to the Sanha LPG FPSO for further processing and storage.
Bomboco Field:
- A new wellhead platform was installed on the Bomboco field in 2005, exporting a mixture of oil, gas, and water to the East Kokongo platform.
East Kokongo Platform:
- Serves as a large processing platform and transportation hub for fields in Areas B and C.
North N'Dola and South Sanha:
- North N'Dola's platform is a 16 well-slot facility with a 20,000 b/d processing capacity. Excess gas is piped to a flare tower on the South Sanha platform, which has a 40,000 b/d crude processing capacity.
Sanha LPG FPSO
Capacity and Operations:
- The Sanha LPG FPSO, built by Mitsui and IHI, is the largest LPG hull ever built and the first to combine all LPG processing and export functions onboard. It has a daily processing capacity of 6,000 m³ and an LPG storage capacity of 135,000 m³ in six tanks.
- The FPSO processes mixed LPG into butane and propane, which are then chilled, stored, and periodically transferred to LPG export tankers.
Technical Specifications:
- The FPSO is 264 meters long, with a beam of 49 meters and a moulded depth of 29.3 meters. It has a deadweight of 92,743 tons and an IMO Type B containment system. It is moored in 58 meters of water using a 3 x 3 arrangement.
Gas Management
- The project includes significant gas management initiatives, such as gas injection to maintain reservoir pressure and reduce gas flaring. The Sanha Condensate Project aims to eliminate approximately half of the flaring in Block 0 by reinjecting excess gas into the reservoir.
Contractors and Partners
- SBM Offshore: Responsible for offshore installation, hook-up, and commissioning of the Sanha LPG FPSO, as well as the bareboat charter and operating services.
- IHI Marine: Constructed the Sanha LPG FPSO, excluding the single point mooring system and turret.
- Stolt Offshore and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine: Handled the $660-million contract for the platforms and interconnecting pipelines, including engineering, procurement, construction, installation, hook-up, and commissioning of various platforms.
Environmental and Social Impact
- The project aims to reduce routine gas flaring significantly, aligning with environmental goals. Additionally, Cabgoc's social investment strategy focuses on contributing to sustainable economic and social development, particularly in reducing mortality and morbidity rates, especially for women and children.
Timeline
- 2002: Contract executed between SBM and Cabgoc for the design, procurement, fabrication, and transportation of the Sanha LPG FPSO.
- 2004: Completion of the Sanha LPG FPSO.
- 2005: First production from the Sanha/Bomboco fields and the new wellhead platform on Bomboco.
- 2008: Startup of the Takula Gas Processing Platform and planned start of the Cabinda Gas Plant in the second half of 2009.
