Sao Vang-Dai Nguyet Gas and Condensate Fields Profile
Location
The Sao Vang and Dai Nguyet gas and condensate fields are located in Blocks 05-1b and 05-1c within the Nam Con Son Basin, approximately 300-350 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, offshore Vietnam. The fields are situated in water depths of about 120 meters (394 feet).
Discovery and Development
- The fields were discovered in 2004, with Idemitsu entering into a production sharing contract with PetroVietnam in the same year.
- Seismic surveys and exploration wells were conducted between 2004 and 2014, confirming oil and gas accumulations in the Dai Nga structure and other areas.
- The field development plan was approved by the Vietnamese authorities in 2017.
Ownership and Operation
- The project is operated by Idemitsu Gas Production (Vietnam) Co. Ltd., which holds a 43.08% stake.
- Other partners include Teikoku Oil, a subsidiary of Inpex, with a 36.92% stake, and Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) with a 20% stake.
Field Development
- The development includes the Sao Vang central processing platform (CPP) and the Dai Nguyet wellhead platform. The Sao Vang CPP is connected to the Dai Nguyet wellhead platform via an infield pipeline system.
- The Sao Vang CPP features production well slots, support dry trees, two compressor trains, and two boosters. The topside of the Sao Vang CPP weighs approximately 14,500-15,500 metric tons, and the jacket and piles weigh around 12,733-16,500 metric tons.
- The Dai Nguyet field is developed using a wellhead platform supporting dry trees, with a subsea system tying back production to the Sao Vang platform.
Infrastructure
- A gas pipeline was laid to export gas from the Sao Vang and Dai Nguyet fields, as well as the Thein Ung and Dai Hung fields, to the Nam Con Son 2 pipeline at the BK Thien Ung area.
- The condensate produced is pumped to the floating storage and offloading (FSO) facility named Golden Star, which has a storage capacity of 800,000 barrels and a design life of 15 years. The FSO is owned by Malaysia Vietnam Offshore Terminal (MVOT), a joint venture between PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) and MISC.
Contractors and Construction
- PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) Mechanical & Construction was awarded the main engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) contract for the platforms and infield pipeline system in February 2018.
- Aker Solutions carried out the front-end engineering design (FEED) work for the development. McDermott was subcontracted for the transportation and installation of the central processing platforms, wellhead platform, jacket, topside float-over, pipelines, and subsea power cables.
- Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) was involved in the conversion of the FSO Golden Star and the construction of the external turret for the FSO.
Production
- Production from the Sao Vang field commenced in November 2020, with production from the Dai Nguyet field expected to start in early 2022.
- The annual production is estimated to be approximately 1.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas and 2.8 million barrels (Mbl) of crude oil and condensate.
Reserves
- The discovered petroleum initially in place (DPIIP) for the blocks is estimated to be 75.7 million barrels of oil equivalent (Mboe), 343.7 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas, and 18.4 million barrels (Mbbl) of natural gas liquids.
- As of 2021, the remaining recoverable reserves are estimated to be 19.37 million barrels of crude oil and condensate and 13,938.27 million cubic meters of gas.
Production Outlook
- The field is expected to continue production until it reaches its economic limit in 2043, with peak production achieved in 2022. The field currently accounts for approximately 7% of Vietnam’s daily gas output.
