Satah Oil Field Profile
Location and Ownership
The Satah oil field is located approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in shallow water with a depth of about 69 feet.
The field is owned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Inpex Corp.
Project Overview
The Satah oil field is part of a larger development that includes several projects aimed at enhancing oil and gas production.
Satah al-Razboot (SARB) Offshore Oilfield
This is a significant component of the Satah oil field development:
- Location: About 200km northwest of Abu Dhabi.
- Production Capacity: Expected to add 100,000 barrels per day to the UAE's oil production capacity upon commissioning in 2016.
- Developer: ADMA-APCO, with ADNOC as the sole owner.
- Infrastructure:
- The project involves the construction of two artificial, falcon-shaped islands to facilitate drilling. Each island measures 500 meters in length and requires significant dredging and filling works (13 million cubic meters of rock excavation and 4.5 million cubic meters of fill).
- The offshore facilities include two riser platforms, four flare platforms, four interconnecting bridges, and a single point mooring (SPM) buoy.
- Oil from the wells is transferred via a subsea pipeline to a processing facility on Zirku Island, which has a capacity of 200,000 barrels of oil per day. This facility also processes oil from the neighboring Umm al-Lulu oilfield.
- Contractors:
- Mixed dredging and civil engineering works: Dredging International and Middle East Dredging Company (MEDCO).
- EPC contract for the islands: Petrofac and Hyundai E&C (HDEC). Petrofac handles subsea connections and drilling, while HDEC constructs the processing and export facilities.
- Other contractors include Byrne Looby Partners (BLP) for design and project management, NSCC Ground Improvement for ground improvement works, and Concrete Layer Innovations (CLI) for armoured land revetments.
Satah Full Field Development
This project focuses on enhancing oil and gas production from the existing field:
- Objective: To maximize crude oil production and oil recovery by reducing the well heads' back pressure and enhancing gas injection capability.
- Scope:
- The project includes brownfield topsides work, offshore pipelines, and onshore works on Zirku Island.
- It aims to increase oil production from 18,000 to 25,000 barrels per day.
- Project Management:
- Penspen provided project management services, including management and supervision of EPC implementation, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning supervision.
- A multidisciplinary task force was set up to interface with the client's project management team throughout the EPC implementation stage.
Contractors Involved
In addition to those mentioned under the SARB project, other key contractors for the Satah conventional oil field include:
- Main EPC Contractors: Egyptian General Petroleum, Rockwell Automation, National Marine Dredging, TechnipFMC, and Target Engineering Construction.
- Other Contractors: Mott MacDonald Group, Penspen, SKEMA, Airpack Nederlands, and Gerab National Enterprises.
Production and Reserves
- Historical Production: The Satah conventional oil field reached its peak production in 1993 and has recovered 69.04% of its total recoverable reserves as of the last available data.
- Future Production: Production is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2059, based on economic assumptions.
Infrastructure and Construction
- Subsea Pipelines and Cables: The project involves laying 200 kilometers of subsea pipelines and 55 kilometers of subsea power and communication cables.
- Onshore Pipeline: An onshore pipeline measuring 3 kilometers long is also part of the infrastructure.
