Shenzi (GC654) - Woodside Oil and Gas Asset Profile

Location

The Shenzi oil and gas field is located approximately 195 km off the coast of Louisiana in the Green Canyon protraction area of the Gulf of Mexico. It spans across lease blocks GC653, GC609, GC610, and GC654.

Discovery and Production

  • The field was discovered in November 2002.
  • Production commenced in March 2009.

Ownership and Operation

  • The field is operated by Woodside Energy Group, which holds a 72% stake.
  • Repsol owns the remaining 28% interest.

Infrastructure

  • The field utilizes a standalone tension leg platform (TLP) installed at a water depth of approximately 1,310 meters (4,300 feet) in July 2008.
  • The TLP has a production capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil per day and 50 million cubic feet of gas per day. It is tied to 20 subsea production and water injection wells.

Production Details

  • Cumulative Production:
    • As of 2019, the field had produced 327.9 million barrels of oil and 3,678.32 million cubic meters of gas.
  • Annual Production:
    • In 2020, the field produced 14.63 million barrels of oil and 164.38 million cubic meters of gas per year.
    • In 2022, production was 13.72 million barrels of oil and 152.73 million cubic meters of gas per year.

Reserves

  • As of 2019, the remaining reserves were estimated at 130.1 million barrels of oil and 1,427.16 million cubic meters of gas.

Shenzi North Expansion

  • The Shenzi North project is an expansion of the existing Shenzi field, discovered in 2017 by BHP Petroleum, which later became part of Woodside’s portfolio in June 2022.
  • The Shenzi North field is located in Green Canyon blocks 608 and 609 and was developed as a two-well subsea tieback to the existing Shenzi TLP.
  • First production from Shenzi North began in September 2023, ahead of the planned 2024 start, with a production capacity of up to 30 million barrels of oil equivalent (mboe) per day.

Subsea Infrastructure

  • The Shenzi North development includes subsea manifolds, high-integrity pressure protection systems (HIPPS), and multiple subsea connection and jumper systems. This infrastructure allows the use of existing flowlines, risers, and topside facilities of the Shenzi TLP.
  • Two 15,000 psi HorizontalBore™ subsea trees were installed in April 2023, enabling flexible completion configurations without interfering with the tree-to-wellhead connection.

Contractors and Partners

  • MODEC International designed the TLP facility.
  • Trendsetter Engineering provided subsea manifolds, HIPPS, and subsea connection and jumper systems.
  • Dril-Quip, in collaboration with Proserv, supplied and installed the HorizontalBore™ subsea trees.
  • McDermott International was involved in the marine installation campaign for the Shenzi Subsea Multiphase Pumping Project.

Transportation

  • Crude oil is transported via connecting pipelines for sale to Gulf Coast customers.
  • Natural gas is transported via a lateral pipeline tied into the Cleopatra natural gas pipeline and ultimately to the Neptune processing plant in St. Mary’s Parish, Louisiana.

Development and Costs

  • The Shenzi North project involved an investment of $544 million, approved by the BHP Board in July 2021.
  • The development of Shenzi North represents the first phase of the Greater Wildling mini basin.
