South Pars Gas Field Development - Phase 19 Profile

Location and Geology

  • The South Pars Gas Field is located in the Persian Gulf, and Phase 19 is part of the Iranian section of this vast gas field, which is the northern extension of Qatar’s North Field.
  • The field is situated approximately 110 km from the Kangan coast and 120 km from the Persian Gulf shoreline.

Development and Contractors

  • Phase 19 of the South Pars Gas Field was awarded to Petropars Limited through an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract in June 2010 by the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
  • The project involved a consortium led by Petropars, with Petropars Iran handling the onshore refinery construction, Petropars Oilfield Services Company (POSCO) managing the drilling operations, and the Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC) responsible for the offshore platforms and submarine pipelines.

Infrastructure and Facilities

  • The phase includes four offshore platforms (three main and one satellite) with 21 wells (15 vertical and 6 horizontal), located 110 km from the coast.
  • Two 32-inch offshore gas transmission pipelines, each approximately 110 km long, and two 4-inch marine pipelines for transporting monoethylene glycol solution, also 110 km long, are part of the infrastructure. Additionally, there is a 36-inch marine pipeline for the gas condensate terminal and two 18-inch cold marine pipelines between the satellite and main platforms.
  • The onshore facility is located in the Tembek region, Bushehr province, within the Pars 2 Energy Special Economic Zone, covering an area of about 218.5 hectares.

Production Targets

  • Phase 19 is designed to produce 56.6 million cubic meters of rich gas per day, 75,000 barrels of gas condensate, 400 tons of sulfur, and annually 1.05 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and one million tons of ethane.

Operational Activities

  • The project involves several key operational activities:
    • Pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, performance testing, and preservation of facilities.
    • Management and operation of all professional hygiene and maintenance workshops.
    • Supervision and implementation of HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) activities at the site.

Challenges and Significance

  • The development of Phase 19 faced significant challenges, including strict embargo conditions, financial resource limitations, and delays in equipment arrival. Despite these challenges, the project was successfully commissioned in April 2017.
  • The phase is crucial due to its location in the border block with the North Gonbad field in Qatar, as delays in its development could result in Iran losing gas reserves to Qatar.

Economic and Strategic Importance

  • The project is valued at approximately $4.8 billion and is one of the largest and most complex projects in the South Pars development plan.
  • It plays a vital role in providing feedstock for petrochemical units and contributing to Iran's energy production and export capabilities.

Commissioning and Current Status

  • Phases 19, 20, and 21 of the South Pars project were officially commissioned in April 2017.
  • The successful completion and operation of Phase 19 have enhanced Petropars' capabilities as an EPC contractor and reinforced its position in Iran's oil and gas industry.
