The Gulf of Thailand, where the South West Platong field is located, consists of Cenozoic sedimentary basins formed by normal faulting. The stratigraphy of the area includes rock layers formed during the Late Miocene-Recent period, comprising mudstone interbedded with sandstone, shale, and coal, which are part of fluvial and shallow marine depositions.

The South West Platong field is one of several petroleum-producing fields in the Gulf of Thailand. The area is known for its high potential in terms of petroleum production, with the Gulf of Thailand accounting for a significant portion of Thailand's domestic production. As of 2016, the cumulative production in the Gulf of Thailand included approximately 4,944 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE), which covered about 90.5% of Thailand's total domestic production.
