Statfjord Nord Oil Field Profile

Location

Statfjord Nord is located in the Tampen area in the northern part of the North Sea, approximately 17 kilometres northeast of the main Statfjord field. It is situated in block 33/9, within the Norwegian production licence PL037.

Discovery and Development

The Statfjord Nord field was discovered in 1977 by Norskald. The plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 1990. The field has been developed using three subsea templates (D, E, and F) tied back to the Statfjord C platform. The D template is used for water injection, while the other two handle oil production.

Geology and Reservoir

The field produces oil from Middle Jurassic sandstone in the Brent Group and Upper Jurassic sandstone in the Munin Formation. The reservoirs are located at a depth of about 2,600 metres and are of good quality.

Production

Production from Statfjord Nord began in 1995. The field uses pressure maintenance through water injection to enhance recovery. The well stream is transported through two pipelines to the Statfjord C facility for processing, storage, and export. Oil is loaded onto tankers, and gas is exported through the Tampen Link and the Far North Liquids and Gas System (FLAGS) pipeline to the UK.

Production Profile

The Statfjord Nord field has recovered approximately 92.59% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production achieved in 2000. Based on economic assumptions, production is expected to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2035.

Infrastructure

The field is tied back to the Statfjord C platform, which also processes and exports production from the Statfjord Nord, Statfjord Øst, and Sygna fields. The Statfjord C platform provides the necessary infrastructure for processing, storage, and export of the hydrocarbons produced from these fields.

Ownership and Operation

The Statfjord Nord field is operated by Equinor Energy AS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Equinor ASA. The field is owned by a consortium that includes Equinor, Eni, OKEA, HitecVision, and Petoro. Following recent transactions, OKEA holds a 28% interest in the field.

Future Plans and Extensions

There are ongoing efforts to extend the lifetime of the Statfjord area fields, including Statfjord Nord. Equinor's Field Life extension (FLX) unit, established in 2020, aims to increase remaining reserves, reduce overall costs, and cut CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030. New wells have been drilled, with one new well added in 2022 and another planned for 2024.

Economic and Environmental Aspects

The Statfjord area, including Statfjord Nord, has generated significant revenues, with total production exceeding 5.1 billion barrels of oil equivalent (Bboe) and revenues of over NOK 1,675 billion ($155.92 billion). Efforts are underway to reduce emissions and extend the field's lifetime, aligning with Equinor's sustainability goals.
