Suizhong 36-1 Oil Field Profile
Location and Geology
- The Suizhong 36-1 Oil Field is located in the Liaodong Bay of the Bohai Sea, China, approximately 46 kilometers off the coast in the northern part of Bohai Bay within the Liaohe subbasin.
- The field is situated in shallow water with an average depth of about 30 meters.
- Geologically, it is characterized as a large heavy oil field with a loose oil reservoir, strong heterogeneity, high viscosity, and a low oil/gas ratio.
Discovery and Production History
- The Suizhong 36-1 oil field was discovered in 1987.
- Production commenced in February 1993, marking the beginning of Phase I.
- Phase II production started in 2000, and the Suizhong 36-1 Phase II adjustment project began production in October 2013.
- In June 2024, the field achieved a significant milestone by producing over 100 million tonnes of crude oil, making it the first offshore field in China to do so.
Production Details
- The field is known for producing heavy oil with a crude gravity of 14 to 19° American Petroleum Institute (API).
- At its peak, the field produced more than five million tonnes of crude oil annually. As of 2024, the daily crude oil output is around 8,900 tonnes.
- The recovery factor in developed blocks over 30 years of production has been 33.9%.
Infrastructure and Facilities
- The field has been developed in two main phases. Phase I included three platforms, while Phase II involved one central processing platform, six wellhead platforms, a 70-kilometer oil pipeline to onshore, twelve subsea pipelines, and five subsea electric cables.
- The Suizhong 36-1 Phase II adjustment project added four new platforms to the existing infrastructure.
- Currently, the field has a total of 24 offshore platforms and 545 oil wells.
Suizhong 36-1/Luda 5-2 Oilfield Secondary Adjustment and Development Project
- This project, which commenced production in February 2024, is the largest secondary development and adjustment project in offshore China.
- The project includes two new central processing platforms and two new wellhead platforms. A total of 118 development wells are planned, comprising 81 production wells and 37 water injection wells.
- The project aims to further tap the oilfield potential and contain the decline in production. It is expected to achieve a peak production of approximately 30,300 barrels of crude oil per day in 2025.
Environmental and Operational Considerations
- The project is developed with a focus on sustainable development, utilizing onshore power supply to consume green electricity generated onshore, thus promoting green and low-carbon development of offshore oil and gas resources.
Operator and Ownership
- The Suizhong 36-1 Oil Field is fully owned and operated by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
Reserves and Future Production
- The field has geological oil reserves of more than 300 million tonnes.
- Based on economic assumptions, production from the Suizhong 36-1 field is expected to continue until it reaches its economic limit in 2046, with the field currently accounting for approximately 1% of China’s daily oil output.
Associated Fields
- The Suizhong 36-1 field acts as a hub for several satellite fields, including Luda 4-2, Luda 10-1, and Luda 5-2. The Luda Cluster in the Bohai Bay features multiple heavy oil fields, with recent developments such as the Luda 6-2 oilfield and the Luda 5-2 oilfield north phase I project.
