Sururu Oil and Gas Field Profile

Location

The Sururu Oil and Gas Field is located in the Santos Basin, offshore Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The exact coordinates are -24.979, -42.593 (WGS 84).

Project Details

  • Status: Operating
  • Operator: Petrobras
  • Owners:
    • Petrobras: 42.5%
    • Shell Brasil: 25.0%
    • TotalEnergies: 22.5%
    • Petrogal Brasil (Galp): 10.0%.

Discovery and Development

  • Discovery Year: 2008
  • Production Start Year: 2018
  • The field is part of the Iara complex, which also includes the Berbigão and Atapu oil and gas fields.

Production

  • Oil Production:
    • 10.85 million barrels per year (2020).
    • 26.34 million barrels per year (2022).
  • Gas Production:
    • 382.52 million cubic meters per year (2020).
    • 973.36 million cubic meters per year (2022).

Infrastructure

  • The field is developed using the FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) unit P-68, which started production in November 2019. This FPSO is designed to operate in the pre-salt projects within the Santos Basin and has a capacity to process 150,000 barrels of oil and 6 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. It is connected to 10 producer and seven injector wells.

Geology and Reservoir

  • The Sururu field is characterized by high-quality carbonate reservoirs, similar to other fields in the pre-salt area of the Santos Basin. An appraisal well in Sururu revealed the largest oil column in the Santos Basin pre-salt area, with 530 meters of net oil pay.

Unitisation Agreements

  • The Sururu accumulation, along with Berbigão and Atapu, is subject to unitisation processes with surrounding areas. These agreements were submitted to the Brazilian regulatory body, ANP (Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis), and are part of the Greater Iara project development.

Exploration and Testing

  • Extended Well Tests (EWTs) have been conducted in the Sururu Southwest area, including a six-month EWT through the FPSO Cidade de São Vicente. These tests have proven the high productivity and commercial viability of the field.

Environmental and Technical Considerations

  • The pre-salt fields in Brazil, including Sururu, are known for their extreme depths (ranging from 18,000 to 25,000 feet below sea level) and high-pressure conditions, which present significant technical challenges and high costs for development.
  • Baker Hughes has been awarded contracts to supply Petrobras with flexible pipe systems for the Sururu field, among others, to address issues such as stress-induced corrosion cracking from CO2, which is crucial for reducing emissions and enhancing oil recovery.

Economic and Strategic Importance

  • The Sururu field, along with other pre-salt fields in Brazil, is a significant contributor to the country's oil and gas production. In 2018, pre-salt production exceeded that from all other fields in Brazil, and by 2020, it accounted for 70% of Brazilian oil output.
