Sygna Oil Field Profile

Location

The Sygna oil field is situated in the Tampen area of the northern North Sea, specifically northeast of the Statfjord Nord field. The field operates in a water depth of 300 meters.

Discovery and Development

The Sygna field was discovered in 1996. The plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 1999. The field has been developed with a single subsea template equipped with four well slots, which is connected to the Statfjord C facility. Three production wells have been drilled from this template, and a long-reach water injection well was drilled from the Statfjord Nord template.

Production

Production at the Sygna field began in 2000. The field is estimated to contain approximately 53.5 million barrels of recoverable oil. Initially, it was expected that the two main production wells would continue producing until around 2014, but with ongoing operations and maintenance, production has remained stable beyond this period.

Reservoir

The Sygna field produces oil from Middle Jurassic sandstone in the Brent Group. The reservoir is located at a depth of 2650 meters and is characterized by good quality.

Recovery Strategy

The production from the Sygna field is maintained through pressure maintenance using water injection. This strategy helps keep the reservoir pressure constant, optimizing oil recovery.

Transport and Processing

The well stream from the Sygna field is transported via a pipeline to the Statfjord C facility for processing, storage, and export. The field shares a process module on Statfjord C with Statfjord Nord and Statfjord Øst. The oil is loaded onto tankers, while the gas is exported through the Tampen Link and the Far North Liquids and Gas System (FLAGS) pipeline to the UK.

Current Status

As of recent updates, the production from the Sygna field remains stable. The field continues to be operated with a focus on maintaining reservoir pressure through water injection.

Ownership and Operations

The Sygna field is currently operated by Equinor Energy AS. However, there have been recent changes in ownership interests. In January 2024, JAPEX completed procedures to acquire interests in the Sygna oil and gas field, as part of its expansion in Norwegian offshore operations.

Historical and Financial Aspects

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate provides detailed data on the accrued investments and resource estimates for the Sygna field. While specific financial figures are not detailed here, the field's development and operation have been part of broader investments in the Norwegian North Sea oil and gas sector.

In summary, the Sygna oil field is a significant production asset in the Norwegian North Sea, characterized by its stable production, efficient recovery strategies, and ongoing operational adjustments to optimize its lifespan.
