Tommeliten A
- Type: Rig
- field
- Latitude: 56.4014320
- Longitude: 2.9018028
Location and Geology
- The Tommeliten A field is located in the southern part of the Norwegian sector in the North Sea, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the Ekofisk field. It extends into the UK sector, but the Norwegian share of the field is 99.57%.
- The field is situated at a water depth of 75 meters and contains hydrocarbons in the chalk layers of the Paleocene Ekofisk Formation and the Upper Cretaceous Tor Formation, at a depth of about 3,000 meters.
Discovery and Development History
- The Tommeliten A field was discovered in 1977. Previous development attempts were unsuccessful due to a lack of available processing capacity at Ekofisk, but this issue has since been resolved.
- The Plan for Development and Operation (PDO) was approved by Norwegian and UK authorities in July 2022.
Development Concept and Infrastructure
- The field is developed using a subsea production system, comprising two subsea templates with slots for up to 12 wells. These templates are tied back to the existing Ekofisk Complex via an electrically heated flowline.
- The development includes the installation of a new processing module on Ekofisk 2/4 M, an electrical heating module on Ekofisk 2/4 Z, and upgrades to the existing gas train on Ekofisk 2/4 J.
- The well stream is transported to the Ekofisk Centre by pipelines, and then routed to export pipelines via the processing facility at Ekofisk to Teesside in the UK and to Emden in Germany.
Production and Resource Estimates
- The total resource potential for the Tommeliten A field is estimated to be within the range of 120-180 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE), primarily comprising gas (approximately 70%) and condensate (approximately 30%).
- Initial production started in October 2023, nearly six months ahead of the initial schedule. Peak production is expected to range from 35,000 to 48,000 BOE per day, with potential for further expansion based on processing capabilities and well streams.
Environmental and Sustainability Aspects
- The Tommeliten A field is noted for its low emissions intensity, estimated at 7.5 kg CO2 equivalent per BOE, Scope 1 & 2 on a net equity and gross operated basis. This aligns with the project's commitment to sustainable practices and contributing to energy security while moving towards net-zero goals.
Ownership and Partners
- The Tommeliten A Unit is operated by ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS, which holds a 28.1385% ownership interest.
- Other partners include PGNiG Upstream Norway AS (42.1978%), TotalEnergies EP Norge AS (20.1430%), Vår Energi ASA (9.0907%), ConocoPhillips (U.K.) Holdings Limited (0.2109%), TotalEnergies E&P UK Limited (0.1510%), and ENI UK Limited (0.0681%).
Capital Investment and Job Creation
- The total capital investment for the project is approximately NOK 13 billion (around $1.18 billion USD).
- The project has facilitated around 5,000 job opportunities during the development phase, with most contracts awarded to Norwegian businesses.
Contractors and Technical Details
- Key contractors involved include REINERTSEN New Energy for front-end engineering and design (FEED) of the subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines system (SURF), and Aker Solutions for FEED, engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) work, as well as topside modifications on the Ekofisk installations.
- Prosafe provided accommodation support for the tie-in of the field.
Production Start and Future Potential
- Production from the Tommeliten A field started in October 2023, significantly ahead of the original schedule.
- The field has the potential for additional wells, with 11 production wells currently in place and a 12th well slot reserved for a potential future replacement well.
