Discovery and Exploration

The field was discovered in 2012 through the Tukau Timur Deep-1 well, which was drilled to a depth of 4,830 meters (15,846 feet). This well discovered 12 gas-bearing reservoirs with a total net gas sand of 183 meters (600 feet). It is notable as the first completed high-pressure/high-temperature well in Sarawak and the deepest vertical well drilled by PETRONAS.

Ownership and Operation

The Tukau Timur Deep Gas Field is operated by PETRONAS Carigali, a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), with a 50% interest. The remaining 50% interest is held by Sarawak Shell Berhad.

Reserves

Preliminary assessments indicate that the Tukau Timur field has approximately 2.1 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas in place.

Production

While the exact production start year is not specified in all sources, it is expected that commercial production will begin in the near future. According to some reports, production from the Tukau Timur conventional gas development project is forecast to start in 2024 and peak in 2026. The field is expected to continue producing until it reaches its economic limit in 2042.
