Tyrving Oil Project Profile

Location and Geology

  • The Tyrving field is located in the Alvheim area of the Norwegian North Sea, approximately 24 km east of the Alvheim field.
  • It is situated on the Heimdal Terrace, with the discoveries spread across production licenses PL102F/G and PL036E/F.
  • The reservoirs contain oil in sandstone from the Paleocene in the Heimdal Formation, with the water depth in the area being around 120 meters.

Discoveries and Reservoirs

  • The Tyrving field consists of three main discoveries: Trell, Trine, and Trell North.
    • The Trell discovery was made in 2014 in production licence 102F.
    • The Trine discovery was made in 1973 in production licence 036E.

Development and Infrastructure

  • The Tyrving field is being developed as a subsea tieback to the Alvheim floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) facility.
  • The development involves the drilling of three wells and the installation of two new subsea manifolds, which are connected to existing infrastructure at East Kameleon and further linked to the Alvheim FPSO.
  • The plan includes using bilateral horizontal producers to drain the Trell and Trine reservoirs, with an extra branch to be drilled off one of the laterals in Trell to increase the recovery rate. An exploration pilot well was drilled in the Trell North prospect to confirm volume estimates.

Ownership and Partners

  • Aker BP operates the Tyrving field with a 61.26% stake.
  • Other stakeholders include Petoro with a 26.84% interest and PGNiG Upstream Norway, a subsidiary of ORLEN Group, holding 11.9%.

Production and Resources

  • Oil production from the Tyrving field began in September 2024, ahead of the originally planned start in the first quarter of 2025.
  • The recoverable resources in the Tyrving field are estimated to be around 25 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).
  • The field is designed to operate with exceptionally low carbon emissions, estimated at just 0.3 kg of CO2 per barrel of oil produced.

Economic and Environmental Aspects

  • The development of the Tyrving field was completed below the original budget, with an investment of approximately NOK6bn ($561m).
  • The project leverages the extended operational life of the Alvheim field, increasing overall production capacity while reducing operating costs and carbon emissions per barrel.

Regulatory Approval

  • The Plan for Development and Operation (PDO) for the Tyrving field was approved by the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in June 2023.

Broader Context

  • The Tyrving development is part of Aker BP's strategy to extend the lifespan of the Alvheim field, with plans to keep the Alvheim FPSO in operation until 2040 and aim for a total production of over 1 billion boe from the Alvheim area.
  • The project aligns with the goal of increasing energy supply in Europe, particularly in the context of reduced Russian energy imports following the invasion of Ukraine.
