Location and Geology

The Umm Shaif Oil and Gas Field is located offshore in the United Arab Emirates, specifically in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. The field is situated in the Umm Shaif and Nasr block, with a water depth of approximately 43 feet.

Discovery and Development

The Umm Shaif field was discovered in 1958 and was initially developed by Abu Dhabi Marine Areas Ltd, a joint venture between British Petroleum and Compagnie Française des Pétroles (CFP—later TotalEnergies). Currently, the field is operated and owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), with additional ownership stakes held by Eni S.P.A. (10%), TotalEnergies (20%), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) (6%), and CNOOC Limited (4%).

Production History and Capacity

Production at the Umm Shaif field began in 1962, with the first crude exports starting in July of that year.

• The field has a current production capacity of approximately 275,000 barrels per day (b/d) of crude oil, which is part of ADNOC's broader goal to achieve five million barrels per day (mmbpd) by 2030.
• Historical production data indicates that the field produced around 2.93 million barrels per year in 2017, though its design capacity is significantly higher, at around 128.77 million barrels per year by 2027.

Reserves

The Umm Shaif field has substantial reserves:

• Remaining recoverable reserves of crude oil and condensate are estimated at 904.83 million barrels as of 2023.
• Gas reserves are estimated at 64,440.89 million cubic meters as of 2023.
• Total proven oil reserves are around 3.9 billion barrels (550 million tonnes).

Expansion and Development Projects

Several expansion projects are associated with the Umm Shaif field:

• Long-Term Development Plan – Phase 1 (LTDP-1): This project, awarded to National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) in 2022, involves engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning activities. The contract is valued at $946 million and is expected to be completed by 2025. It includes modifications and extensions of existing facilities, installation of new subsea cables and pipelines, and the design of three new lean well-head towers with associated pipelines.
• Umm Shaif Giant Gas Cap Development: This project is part of the broader development plans for the field.
• Umm Shaif Gas Phase 2: Another phase in the ongoing development of the field's gas resources.
• Umm Shaif LTDP-2: The second phase of the long-term development plan, which is in various stages of feed, feasibility, and construction.

Contractors and Partners

Several contractors are involved in the development and maintenance of the Umm Shaif field:

• National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC): Awarded the EPC contract for LTDP-1.
• Eni and McDermott International: Involved in design and FEED engineering.
• National Marine Dredging: Main EPC contractor.
• Other Contractors: Include Engineers India, Penspen, Jiangsu Zhongtian Technology, and Amarinth.

Economic and Strategic Significance

The Umm Shaif field is a significant contributor to the UAE's oil production, accounting for approximately 5% of the country's daily output. The field's long-term development is crucial for ADNOC's strategic objective of achieving five million barrels of oil production capacity per day by 2030.

Production Outlook

Based on economic assumptions, production from the Umm Shaif field is expected to continue until it reaches its economic limit in 2059. Peak production is anticipated around 2039, with the field having already recovered about 54.21% of its total recoverable reserves as of recent data.

In-Country Value

A significant portion of the contract value, more than 75%, will be covered by ADNOC’s In-Country Value program, which aims to support the growth and diversification of the UAE’s economy.
